This supports near-field communication (NFC) and even proximity detection as a method of setting up peripherals. Users need to simply bring a device next to its host, for example a computer or a hub, to associate these two.

The new technology is expected to be faster and support higher frequency ranges of 6GHz and up. Moreover, battery-equipped devices should use less energy. There isn’t yet a fixed date when the wireless USB 1.1 will be available; this will depend on companies producing components for computers, but also for the devices themselves.

Most now available Wireless USB hardware is limited to specialized hubs for attaching wireless devices, like Belkin’s Wireless USB hub, but also a handful of computers which can add Wireless USB as an extra.

Fujitsu to offer ultra-fast wireless charging http://www.htlounge.net/art/13478/fujitsu-to-offer-ultra-fast-wireless-charging.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13478/fujitsu-to-offer-ultra-fast-wireless-charging.html#comments Fri, 17 Sep 2010 20:34:33 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13478 On September 13, 2010, Fujitsu announced that it has developed wireless charging technology, which can charge devices in about 1/150th of the time that is currently necessary by devices such as the Powermat. The new technology relies on magnetic resonance and is able to charge even more than one device. The Fujitsu way, unlike the more ordinary electromagnetic induction method, doesn’t need the power receiver and transmitter to be in alignment.

Moreover, magnetic resonance works on a range of a few feet, while a single transmitter can power several devices. Fujitsu’s prototype charger is showing a handset with an integrated wireless charger, which lets it charge within the range of the transmitter, no matter its position, at almost 85 percent efficiency.

The market release is expected in 2012, with the first supported devices to be handsets. Fujitsu seems to also intend to bring its new technology into garages and parking spots to power electric cars.

Leaked information on ASUS WX-Lamborghini wireless mouse http://www.htlounge.net/art/13437/leaked-information-on-asus-wx-lamborghini-wireless-mouse.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13437/leaked-information-on-asus-wx-lamborghini-wireless-mouse.html#comments Mon, 13 Sep 2010 21:15:16 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13437 According to an image and a technical drawing from an FCC filing, ASUS may soon launch a new mouse branded with Lamborghini badges and styled after the Italian manufacturer’s supercars. This matches the company’s limited-run notebooks (for example, the VX5 and VX6). The technical drawing shows that ASUS plans to bundle a 2.4GHz nano USB receiver, but also that it will use RF wireless rather than Bluetooth.

The company’s new mouse will be powered by an included AA battery; moreover, the user will have the possibility to adjust its DPI setting thanks to a button press sequence. There are four buttons, as is a scroll wheel. There is still no indication of when or where the mouse will be released or what will be the price.

Qi wireless power will get BlackBerry/iPhone add-ons and more power http://www.htlounge.net/art/13361/qi-wireless-power-will-get-blackberryiphone-add-ons-and-more-power.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13361/qi-wireless-power-will-get-blackberryiphone-add-ons-and-more-power.html#comments Mon, 06 Sep 2010 19:53:17 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13361 The Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi format seems to be ready to be built into hardware. Following earlier approval, Energizer is currently developing a wire-free charging sleeve for Apple’s iPhone 3G and 3GS, but also for the older BlackBerry Curve 8900. Polished variants of either are expected in the fall.

Sanyo, National Semiconductor and ST-Ericsson are also working on Qi-based devices, even if the last two will most probably produce hardware for others rather than sell it themselves. Prototypes are expected to show at a Consortium meeting on September 15, in Belgium.

Also as part of the news, WPC declared that it was developing a higher-powered variant of Qi. The actual implementation is able to handle only 5W, being limited mostly to MP3 players, phones and other low-energy devices; therefore, a new spec may support netbooks, tablets and maybe even full-size notebooks and power tools, such as drills.

There are other companies involved in the group, including Olympus, Philips, Samsung and Texas Instruments; however, these are not the only companies permitted to manufacture Qi hardware.

Free Wi-Fi on San Francisco International Airport http://www.htlounge.net/art/12624/free-wi-fi-on-san-francisco-international-airport.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12624/free-wi-fi-on-san-francisco-international-airport.html#comments Fri, 25 Jun 2010 11:48:43 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12624 As declared on June 21, 2010, the San Francisco International Airport will soon offer free Wi-Fi. On September 1, terminals will switch from the paid service from T-Mobile to free access. According to airport officials, this move is a reaction to numerous surveys, which showed that most of the clients weren’t enthusiastic on paying for the Internet service, especially because it takes a lot of time for signing on.

This way, SFO becomes the third major San Francisco Bay Area airport to offer wireless access for free; San Jose and Oakland were the first to switch to free Wi-Fi in 2008. The move could result as being very helpful to AT&T, because iPad and iPhone owners, as well as others, don’t have to pay for service anymore or use the carrier’s cellular network, which is not as fast, in order to get online between two flights.

WirelessHD to support wireless smartphone video http://www.htlounge.net/art/12178/wirelesshd-to-support-wireless-smartphone-video.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12178/wirelesshd-to-support-wireless-smartphone-video.html#comments Sun, 16 May 2010 21:34:57 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12178 The WirelessHD Consortium released the 1.1 version of its specifications, being the second ultra-fast wireless standard to receive an update. The new version pushes the bandwidth to 10Gbps as a minimum and 28Gbps as a maximum. The extra speed makes possible 3D and 4K video over wireless. A major focus is portability, as it can stream video without any compression between the source and a smartphone or a media player.

Regular and portable devices as well can now create personal area networks to synchronize files between different devices. Even with the lowest amount of power possible, multi-gigabit transfer speeds are still available and the amount of battery consumption on mobile hardware is reduced.

HDCP 2.0 encryption is new and is able to send copy protected video but still allow copying of files.

The Consortium did not announce a timeframe for its 1.1 specifications reaching shipping products. Companies are only now given access to the newest version of WirelessHD. It should join a new range of wireless TV sets and home theatre receivers. It also has the option of equipping many smaller devices.

WirelessHD arrives to hardware manufacturers at the same time as WiGig does. It could provide multi-gigabit wireless support for almost all networking and streaming in a relatively near future.

InFocus offers MacBook-dedicated wireless projector adapter http://www.htlounge.net/art/11122/infocus-offers-macbook-dedicated-wireless-projector-adapter.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/11122/infocus-offers-macbook-dedicated-wireless-projector-adapter.html#comments Sat, 13 Feb 2010 22:45:20 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=11122 On February 8, 2010, InFocus has announced that the DisplayLink Wireless system, used for connecting netbooks to projectors without wires, is now fully compatible with MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks, as till now, it was only offering Windows support. The USB device, using Wisair’s Ultra Wide Band (UWB) wireless technology, is able to pass through HD video content and also audio. Mac users are now able to control their projectors via the new InFocus DisplayLink Wireless unit.

Before, for obtaining the same level of connectivity, MacBook users had to use a mini-DisplayPort or a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, a VGA cable for their projector and an audio cable as well. The adapter is USB-based on both ends (the projector and the notebook). It has a preinstalled Flash driver, which makes it work without a separate software install; it also has a 128-bit built-in encryption, used to prevent signal hijacking. The maximum range with the other UWB devices is about 30 feet. This type of adapter is compatible with InFocus projectors only.

MacBook-dedicated InFocus DisplayLink Wireless offers support for both Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6). It will be shipping somewhere in March, at a price which will match the current product’s $159 price.
