The goal of this initiative is to facilitate migration to electronic records and reduce costs, at least theoretically, but also improve the quality of the service.

Reports of CNBC say that as a consequence, medical software developers are now rushing to develop applications for the iPad. The iPad is not the only tablet to draw attention and therefore applications are also expected to come to Android tablets as well as to Research in Motion’s PlayBook. The iPad is however supposed to concentrate the medical application development, at least for the near future.

Apart from electronic records, another major direction for the iPad’s use would be to explain illnesses to patients. Its portability and media support make the tablet easy to be carried into a patient’s room and be used to illustrate a condition in a graphical manner. Older medical computers are considered more difficult to handle.

Android still ahead of iPhone in the United States, says comScore http://www.htlounge.net/art/14434/android-still-ahead-of-iphone-in-the-united-states-says-comscore.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14434/android-still-ahead-of-iphone-in-the-united-states-says-comscore.html#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 20:53:59 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14434 According to comScore, Apple is still behind Google in smartphone market share. Data of November shows that Google’s share has grown with 6.4 percent over the previous three months, reaching 26 percent share. This move has put it ahead of Apple which has grown but reached only 25 percent.

Research in Motion’s share has mainly been affected. For example, the BlackBerry dropped 4.1 percent and reached 33.5 percent, at striking distance of Google and Apple as well. Windows Phone 7 did not succeed to offset its predecessor’s decline and Microsoft’s share dropped 1.8 percent, hitting nine percent sharp.

For the first time, RIM’s deficit was enough for the company to decrease in its overall phone share and not only smartphones. it dropped about two tenths and hit 8.8 percent. With the only exception of Samsung, the market leader, the other four companies of the top five phone producers declined simultaneously. Most of them were traditional phone manufacturers or have been weak in the United States, like Nokia.

It is not certain whether the outlook of the next three months will be like the current one. As Verizon is expected to launch the iPhone during the next weeks, the security Google enjoys now in selling through a carrier that has not access to the iPhone should be reduced.

US Supreme Court expected to determine if class-action limits are legal http://www.htlounge.net/art/14123/us-supreme-court-expected-to-determine-if-class-action-limits-are-legal.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14123/us-supreme-court-expected-to-determine-if-class-action-limits-are-legal.html#comments Mon, 15 Nov 2010 10:55:45 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14123 The Supreme Court of the United States is now hearing arguments in a case with possibly significant implications for filed class-action lawsuits against cellular carriers as well as other companies. Judges will try to determine the lawfulness of contract language which blocks customers from pursuing class actions against companies.

The current lawsuit involves AT&T and a couple from California who filed a complaint after being forced to pay $30 as sales tax on free handsets. The practice being widespread across the large base of customers of AT&T, the Californian couple sought class-action status in order to represent all customers who were affected.

AT&T’s practice of drafting its contracts with the clause blocking class-action filings in favor of arbitration is not specific to this company, many others adopting the same model. In this case, customers are forced to pursue complaints through private arbitrators, with negotiations handled in a confidential mode.

There are critics of arbitration clauses who believe that sometimes companies are privileged by private arbitrators. According to a report in Wall Street Journal, confidentiality agreements are keeping other customers unacquainted with possible fraud. Some of the companies respond that class-action lawyers would be the only winners were arbitration clauses are invalidated.

A final ruling in this case against AT&T is expected to be announced by the Supreme Court.

Sony sells 2.5 million of its PlayStation Move monthly, near shortage http://www.htlounge.net/art/13956/sony-sells-2-5-million-of-its-playstation-move-monthly-near-shortage.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13956/sony-sells-2-5-million-of-its-playstation-move-monthly-near-shortage.html#comments Tue, 26 Oct 2010 12:05:27 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13956 Sony said to have shipped 2.5 million PlayStation Move controllers over a month. One million of them have arrived in the United States and 1.5 million have gone to Europe. A very high rate of the sales forced John Koller, the hardware marketing lead of the company, to say that the Move was many times near shortage. He declared that the company shipped every single unit they could make.

Koller credited a wide range of gaming software often connected with motion controllers, including 24 games, some of them “serious” or family games. Microsoft’s impending Kinect will be centered on casual games, because its camera-only system is sometimes not as precise as it is needed for shooting games or similar ones.

The win would be a very important event for Sony. The PS3 sales numbers of the company are unknown because the NPD has preferred to mask the information, with the exception of corporate customers, but the situation has been improving slowly, as far as higher capacities and better prices have joined the lineup. Nintendo, with its Wii successful, has seen its sales dropping even after game bundles and price cuts.

Starbucks to launch a new digital network in cooperation with Yahoo http://www.htlounge.net/art/13954/starbucks-to-launch-a-new-digital-network-in-cooperation-with-yahoo.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13954/starbucks-to-launch-a-new-digital-network-in-cooperation-with-yahoo.html#comments Tue, 26 Oct 2010 11:04:07 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13954 Starbucks customers in the United States will soon get a new portal page to log into the Internet, which will offer news, entertainment and content related to health/lifestyle, all these free but available only in stores. The content is coming from premium content providers.

The SDN (Starbucks Digital Network) and its content have been optimized for mobile devices and laptops and is built and supported by Yahoo. There will be six channels of options which will include, besides a personalized Starbucks channel, content related to business, careers, entertainment, health and wellness as well as local listings. Among the expected providers, users will find New York Times, LinkedIn and Zagat, together with health magazine content.

Options for social networking will not miss and it will not be necessary to leave the portal in order to use them. Tracking users’ habits will help to improve offerings. Only a limited number of ads will be presented by Yahoo. Over thirty million Starbucks customers logged into the free internet service last month. It was offered at stores and was revamped in July. The service does not require a Starbucks loyalty card anymore.

The entire Starbucks Digital Network will use HTML5 to display its content and video will be included.

Windows for cars with Silverlight and speech-to-text http://www.htlounge.net/art/13921/windows-for-cars-with-silverlight-and-speech-to-text.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13921/windows-for-cars-with-silverlight-and-speech-to-text.html#comments Sat, 23 Oct 2010 18:48:26 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13921 Microsoft, at the SAE Convergence 2010 event, revealed that its new Windows Embedded Automotive 7 is already available to all of its car and in-vehicle entertainment partners. Provided with touch input, enhanced speech commands, access to maps, navigation, third-party applications and music, as well as phone connection through Bluetooth, the new software has Silverlight integrated and allows partners to create 2D and 3D graphics on their desktops and afterwards quickly deploy them on the car platform.

The Tellme speech technology of Microsoft enables users to access any function of the infotainment system by simply talking to it and reply via text messages composed through speech, in a remarkable hands-free experience. Microsoft’s software will recognize UK and US English, Canadian French and Continental French, German, Korean, Mexican Spanish and Continental Spanish.

Fiat, Ford, Kia, Nissan, Alpine and Paccar are partners of Microsoft to receive the new Windows Embedded Automotive 7 software for the cars they produce.

Facebook answered the government letter questioning user privacy http://www.htlounge.net/art/13915/facebook-answered-the-government-letter-questioning-user-privacy.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13915/facebook-answered-the-government-letter-questioning-user-privacy.html#comments Sat, 23 Oct 2010 18:34:44 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13915 Facebook has to respond to an inquiry by the US Government regarding the way third-party applications handle user data. The Wall Street Journal says that two members belonging to the House Bipartisan Privacy Caucus have required an explanation of the way personally identifiable information related to Facebook users and their friends is collected and transmitted by third-party applications.

Most recent concerns focus on new information that applications transmit identification numbers of users and their friends to internet tracking and advertising companies. The letter asked in strong terms that Facebook and its creator Mark Zuckerberg give details of how many users might be affected and what are the intentions of Facebook to solve the problem. The company has received a deadline to respond by the 27th of October. An executive of the company has commented informally that incriminated data transmissions, although not according to Facebook’s guidelines, may have been unintentional.

Papers focus on Samsung Galaxy Tab instead of only iPad http://www.htlounge.net/art/13772/papers-focus-on-samsung-galaxy-tab-instead-of-only-ipad.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13772/papers-focus-on-samsung-galaxy-tab-instead-of-only-ipad.html#comments Tue, 12 Oct 2010 08:14:37 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13772 The Galaxy Tab of Samsung is supposed to become the reference point for news related to Android tablets, as far as companies minimize their dependence on the iPad. Both Wall Street Journal and New York Times are believed to develop applications for Samsung’s device hoping to launch the same application elsewhere. The New York Times application is supposed to come available for free and preloaded on some devices until the paywall of the site goes up in January next year. The application for Wall Street Journal would however follow a typical model of subscription.

USA Today has confirmed the development of a Galaxy Tab application, helped by the presence of the newspaper in the Reader Hub at CTIA. The hub is combining three common applications in a unique place. It includes Kobo for traditional books, Zinio for magazines and PressDisplay for one-for-one recreations of newspapers.

The diversification would include content on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Besides the Amazon Kindle and Kobo eReader, Wall Street Journal parent News Corp. is looking discounted subscriptions on RIM’s slate.

There are broad reasons for the expansion and both technical and financial decisions are included. There are hardware designers who have enticed periodicals to the prospect of a native application deal by promising advertising in these areas. Other periodicals have been attracted by the support offered for background downloading and subscription models which are not necessarily options on the iPad.

Publishers have written for the iPad both because it was the first mainstream mobile tablet present on the market and also for expectations for strong sales (3.27 million in the spring and much more expected in the summer). However, it currently has neither an automatic way to download new issues nor a business model to be able to support subscriptions. All these may change since an official newsstand application may be in work. If this is accurate, a background for downloads would be offered and probably a better deal would be available for publishers looking for more competitive issue prices.

Surprising tests of advanced self-driving vehicles performed by Google http://www.htlounge.net/art/13770/surprising-tests-of-advanced-self-driving-vehicles-performed-by-google.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13770/surprising-tests-of-advanced-self-driving-vehicles-performed-by-google.html#comments Tue, 12 Oct 2010 07:03:00 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13770 Google has surprised everybody by revealing it was testing fully automated robot vehicles. The Audi TT and modified Toyota Prius are much more advanced than the DARPA Challenges cars. They use a combination of radar and laser sensors as well as video cameras to detect both the configuration of the road and other vehicles in the traffic. Test cars have more than 140,000 miles of real traffic, covering distances as San Francisco to Los Angeles. Earlier robots have only been used to drive shorter distances.

Renowned software engineer Sebastian Thrun said that the cars proved to be as safe as they had details about the road in advance. The route and road conditions are mapped out by a regular car which gives the automated vehicle information about what to expect. The automated cars can adapt to fast-changing traffic as well as unexpected situations that might occur. Every robot car has had a human in the passenger’s seat to supervise the tests and be able to override the robot if something went wrong. According to Thrun, police was aware of the tests.

Although unusual for Google, the project is meant to create “highway trains” aiming to cut the number of deadly accidents in half. Robots have the advantage of much faster reflexes than human beings. They also have a complete awareness that human drivers lack. Not only is the number of avoidable accidents expected to be reduced, but also the fuel efficiency is expected to improve. Free drivers are supposed to utilize the 52-minute average commute time for some better purposes.

The automated cars are still considered experimental and do not yet lead to the production of series cars, but there are hopes at Google to obtain more practical cars.

Mercedes-Benz to extend iPad plans to dealerships throughout US http://www.htlounge.net/art/13754/mercedes-benz-to-extend-ipad-plans-to-dealerships-throughout-us.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13754/mercedes-benz-to-extend-ipad-plans-to-dealerships-throughout-us.html#comments Tue, 12 Oct 2010 05:47:46 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13754 Mercedes-Benz has said that all its 355 dealerships in the United States should be equipped with 3G iPads in a short time. A pilot program has been launched in June, consisting of distributing iPads to 40 outfits. The declared intention was to keep customers and dealers out by the cars, instead of forcing them to go into an office to discuss further details.

The auto maker uses a custom system on iPad, MB Advantage, to speed up operations like credit applications, checks on marketing campaigns or inspections of lease turn-ins. The company has received extremely positive feedback and now intends to push iPads out to all its US dealers. It also intends to upgrade MB Advantage to make it capable of allowing some documents to be signed on-screen. This feature should be operational by the end of this month.
