Its 2.5-inch portable drive gets a speed upgrade since the drive now supports USB 3.0, which brings it up to speed with regular disks. Windows users who receive the upgraded Canvio drives also get NTI’s BackupNow EZ for content backup locally or to the cloud, involving specific folders and files.

Anti-shock drive parking and 256-bit encryption are also coming with the new drive. The drives can be formatted to be used with Macs, although regular Canvio drives would lose NTI’s app in this process.

Capacities of 1TB, 750GB and 500GB are now available for the two lines. The prices for the Basics drives are $130, $100 and $80 respectively and a $10 premium is applied to the NTI application on the regular Canvio.

Sony to ship Li-ion energy storage modules http://www.htlounge.net/art/15470/sony-to-ship-li-ion-energy-storage-modules.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15470/sony-to-ship-li-ion-energy-storage-modules.html#comments Tue, 03 May 2011 03:34:14 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15470 Sony will soon start shipping its LIM1001 1.2kWh energy storage modules. A maximum power of 2.5kW is provided by each module. Applications will include backup power for data servers as well as load leveling when demand reaches a peak. Simple shipments were made since June 2010. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are at the core of the modules and the cathode material is olivine-type lithium-ion iron phosphate.

Sony says that the technology used to make these modules includes some advancements over solutions based on nickel-cadmium or lead-acid. Extended lifespan is the first and main benefit, as batteries in these modules are supposed to have a life of about ten years. They do not have a “memory effect” and therefore do not need to be totally discharged before a new recharge. Recharging is very fast, since the modules can be restored up to ninety percent of their capacity in just an hour. Scalability is another positive aspect, as modules can be combined in parallel or serially in order to expand capacity or voltage. Unlike other batteries which use Ni-Cad or lead-acid systems, Li-ion based systems do not use any rare metal or toxic lead which would damage the environment.

The modules present a 2U form factor and therefore can easily fit into 19-inch server racks, which are a standard. No price has been announced yet.

External SSD drive from Iomega to have USB 3.0 http://www.htlounge.net/art/13901/external-ssd-drive-from-iomega-to-have-usb-3-0.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13901/external-ssd-drive-from-iomega-to-have-usb-3-0.html#comments Sat, 23 Oct 2010 18:31:15 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13901 Iomega has entered the external solid-state drives by making the External SSD Flash Drive. Using a 1.8-inch SSD, the storage has a very small footprint but still surpasses a rotating hard drive. It has 191MB per second peak read speeds as well as 130MB per second peak write speeds. The drive is equipped with a USB 3.0 port to handle added speeds.

The SSD drive is still compatible with USB 2.0 and has an option of 256-bit hardware encryption. The device supports both Windows and Mac systems, but Iomega bundles it with cross-platform backup and Windows antivirus software. Being a flash storage, the device should be skip-proof compared to rotating drives and is shipped in a metal enclosure supposed to keep it safe in case of a drop of up to ten feet.

There are three models coming in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities and having prices of $229, $399 and $749. November is the deadline for shipping the entire line of External SSDs from Iomega.

Google to offer its Google Docs editing for iPad and Android http://www.htlounge.net/art/13545/google-to-offer-its-google-docs-editing-for-ipad-and-android.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13545/google-to-offer-its-google-docs-editing-for-ipad-and-android.html#comments Sat, 25 Sep 2010 20:07:30 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13545 Google has recently announced that its online productivity suite, Google Docs, will support editing via the iPad or Android devices soon. The new technology is expected to roll out during the next few weeks; this will also allow at least co-editing of documents produced by others. So far, there hasn’t been anything mentioned about support for authoring. Docs users have access to form, illustration, spreadsheet, presentation and even word processing tools through a desktop or notebook PC.

However, the mobile upgrade is important because it could make the new generation of tablets more practical in a work setting. The iPad, as well as upcoming Android tablets are still developing their enterprise support, even if the iPad currently enjoys greater popularity and even a larger selection of applications. Apple is selling an iPad variant of the iWork suite, but it still doesn’t have the cloud sync capabilities of Docs.

128GB BDXL format approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association http://www.htlounge.net/art/12736/128gb-bdxl-format-approved-by-the-blu-ray-disc-association.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12736/128gb-bdxl-format-approved-by-the-blu-ray-disc-association.html#comments Mon, 28 Jun 2010 15:39:56 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12736 On June 25, 2010, the Blu-ray Disc Association finalized the proposed BDXL format for Blu-ray discs. This will offer up to 128GB of storage space on both rewritable and write-once discs. BDXL will mainly target video producers and people who need to write a large amount of data to a removable backup; this will be possible with triple-layer 100GB rewritable discs (RE) and write-once discs (R), but also with quadruple-layer 128GB R discs.

In order to read BDXL discs, new disc readers have to be especially designed to read this type of discs, even if these will also be compatible with the current 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray disc formats. License information, as well as applications for this new standard are already available for manufacturers. The Association hasn’t yet given any details on the estimated release date of the first BDXL hardware.

128GB flash memory chips from Toshiba http://www.htlounge.net/art/12508/128gb-flash-memory-chips-from-toshiba.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12508/128gb-flash-memory-chips-from-toshiba.html#comments Sun, 20 Jun 2010 20:13:26 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12508 Toshiba has recently released the first 128GB embedded flash memory chip in the history, setting a new mobile storage record. The new chip is built on a 32 nanometer process and it benefits from 16 8GB NAND layers which are meant to double the previous best capacity; this doesn’t affect the thickness, though. Toshiba has used revolutionary thinning techniques, so that the whole design is less than 0.06 inches thick.

The new capacity seems to be enough for a handheld to store chores which were impossible to store before. The manufacturer of the chip estimates that the 128GB could offer 16.6 hours of 1080p video.

The test samples of the 128GB chip are expected to be available by September; full production is about to start during this fall. In August, another similar chip will start sampling, a 64GB one. The mass production of the 64GB chip will begin at the same time with the 128GB one. Even if no customer has yet been named, Apple is expected to use this type of chip, as the company is one of the largest customers for flash memory and uses Toshiba memory for some iPhones, iPods and even solid-state drives for Macs. Toshiba usually uses the memory for some of its notebooks.

Google Storage versus Amazon S3 http://www.htlounge.net/art/12288/google-storage-versus-amazon-s3.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12288/google-storage-versus-amazon-s3.html#comments Sat, 22 May 2010 20:17:38 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12288 Google’s own cloud storage option is on the way to be launched in a bid, in order to take on the S3 from Amazon. Google Storage, also called GS, would permit application developers to host content for users online as well as for themselves. Some sources add that a Google ID should be used for secure downloads and to allow developers to control storage remotely.

The service is supposed to have a private beta version available during the Google I/O conference. It could also be designed to help developers intending to switch from S3.

A similar service would target web applications and could be use as an advantage for Android and Chrome operating system applications, which are expected to use cloud storage heavily. Google Storage, as a result of the implementation, would not be seen as a universal pool but it would allow developers to use it as a common place of their content and also letting users to direct photos and other kind of data straight to Google Storage.
