The initial lawsuit of the company was directed against the owners of PS Jailbreak, but recent documents show that PSFreedom, PSGroove and OpenPSJailbreak are also targeted now.

Motions permitting Sony to serve subpoenas and deposition notices were granted by US District Judge. They can be addressed to third party known to be involved in the sale or distribution of the PS Jailbreak software, such as OpenPSJailbreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove, as well as others who would have knowledge of the sale or distribution of such software.

Sony was recently granted an injunction in Australian courts, which would serve as a temporary ban on PS Jailbreak distribution and would last until a final decision would be made. It is known that hackers have open-sourced the code quickly and have begun to offer it as PSFreedom and the other forms that were named in the lawsuit. A redesigned version of the code is meant to work from smartphones such as Palm Pre and Nokia N900.

Meanwhile, the legal team of Sony goes on with fighting jailbreaking in the courts and the developers of the company work to shut the security exploit through updates of PS3 firmware. Consequently, the version 3.42 is said to disable phone-based software and the PS Jailbreak USB stick.

End of Symbian-based Nseries? http://www.htlounge.net/art/9569/end-of-symbian-based-nseries.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/9569/end-of-symbian-based-nseries.html#comments Fri, 20 Nov 2009 20:28:30 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=9569 Nokia’s N900 has recently been launched. On this occasion, the company said that it will renounce using Symbian in all Nseries services by 2012. Nowadays, Nokia has only one Maemo-based smartphone, but the company plans to quit using Symbian S60 on Nseries, in the future. The end of Symbian-based Nokia smartphones will be gradual, as N900 itself is considered to be a bond between past and future Nokia plans.

It seems that the company is not planning any Maemo-based Eseries business phones or Xseries mainstream media phones, even though some sources say that Nokia has been surprised by the early demand for its new N900 and, if this is caused by user’s preference for the Linux-based platform, the company could consider implementing it in other types of smartphones too. There is a Maemo-specific application store running at the same time with the Ovi Store, but it will be eliminated once Ovi will integrate Maemo.

Maemo is a platform especially designed for touchscreens, which reacts better in multitasking situations. For example, users can run multiple applications at once, without getting slower performance.

Nokia’s future plans jeopardize Symbian; it depends on the phone manufacturer as its main customer. Symbian has also had a problem with Samsung, when the company announced the release of bada, stating that they will stop using Symbian for their phones by 2011. The OS has been the market leader in smartphones, but Symbian could lose its place, not only because of Nokia’s and Samsung’s future plans, but also because of the new Android and iPhone rising platforms.

The one month delay is most likely caused because of Nokia’s awaiting for some feedback from the software developers, who have received 300 units of the N900 to test their dedicated applications on. N900’s launch will be a premiere for Nokia, being the first smartphone to use an open-source Linux operating system.

The new smartphone will benefit from a 3.5-inch touchscreen, with great resolution (800×480) and also from a slide-out keyboard. N900 will most likely have full Flash 9.4 support. The 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU and the new graphics chipset supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 features are some of the most valuable specs of the new smartphone. Other important specs are the onboard GPS, Wi-Fi, 256MB of RAM and HSPA 3G support. The camera has 5-megapixel. The new smartphone has an internal 32GB-memory, which can be enlarged with an up to 16GB microSDHC card.

The price of an unlocked unit of the new N900 will go around $750.
