The only partners previously identified as being part of the service were Rdio, MOG and Spotify, but others could also join the group: Rhapsody, Soundcloud, Vevo and Deezer.

The newcomers are supposed to bring the same unified system with playback and sharing capabilities. As the model was described, each service is expected to identify the basic details of the song and pass them along to Facebook for sharing and also for allowing other services to get the same information. Eventual listeners could have music shared from one service and play it on any other service having the track available. The service should track plays and at the same time inform song recommendations.

As Yvo Schaap said after exploring the new code, some exceptions could appear that would include Amazon MP3, iTunes and other pay per track stores. It seems that primarily choosing unlimited, subscription-based services would aim to guarantee users’ access to more songs without requiring spending more to purchase each song or each album.

Facebook tries to make a hub for music and does not intend to compete with other services like iTunes. As major players like Amazon and Apple would be absent, the music market will be invaded by smaller services that usually have to struggle to get some share. Vevo is a surprise because it is a well known partner of YouTube and supports Google, Facebook’s rival.

Facebook’s f8 conference is expected to bring full details related to the music service.

Presentation leaks TouchPad cloud music video plans http://www.htlounge.net/art/15468/presentation-leaks-touchpad-cloud-music-video-plans.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15468/presentation-leaks-touchpad-cloud-music-video-plans.html#comments Tue, 03 May 2011 04:17:39 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15468 A few days ago, a leaked presentation gave definitive support to Hewlett Packard’s intention to make a webOS cloud media locker in order to beat Google and Apple to this feature. A couple of slides showing the TouchPad revealed the known HP Movie Store and also an intelligent music syncing option online. The copy presented by PreCentral showed not only remotely streaming and storing of music, but also the way of determining owners’ preferred music as well as its prioritization for local caching on the TouchPad.

The mockup of the application, presented in the slide, did not seem to reflect the behavior of the real application. According to what HP had promised, the service would not be exclusive to the TouchPad, as it would eventually reach webOS phones, such as the Veer and Pre3.

Although not yet confirmed by Hewlett Packard, the PC builder acquired Melodeo and the desktop-to-mobile Internet music sharing technology in 2010, a short time after its intention to buy Palm became obvious. Hewlett Packard has promised to help the Palm team by providing webOS with financial support, but it was less clear until now what this help would mean. Most of the company’s public declarations concentrated on carrier and retail deals Palm could not afford before being bought out.

The TouchPad is expected to come in June and could represent a symbolic victory if the cloud service is activated on launch. Apple has made public its plans to switch on a massive datacenter for MobileMe and iTunes, which is supposed to result in an online media locker for iOS devices and iTunes. Google has also said it has been developing a service called Google Music since last spring at Google I/O. however, numerous delays have given clues about abandoning these plans, following problems with labels.

Sony presents new wireless headphones and noise-cancelling earbuds http://www.htlounge.net/art/15280/sony-presents-new-wireless-headphones-and-noise-cancelling-earbuds.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15280/sony-presents-new-wireless-headphones-and-noise-cancelling-earbuds.html#comments Fri, 01 Apr 2011 11:21:30 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15280 Sony UK has recently presented two new sets of headphones. The larger, over-the-ear MDR-RF865RK set benefits from a wireless range of up to 100 meters (almost 330 feet) and features integrated batteries which are recharged when the set is returned to its stand. They benefit from 40mm drivers for solid audio performance and an integrated volume control. A full recharge of the set takes about 3.5 hours, with battery life being rated at 25 hours.

Sony’s smaller MDR-NC13 noise cancelling in-ear headphones are especially designed for travelers. The company claims that these can reduce ambient noise by almost 87.4 percent. The set is shipped with a manganese battery. However, adding a single AAA alkaline battery would result in a total assumed life of 100 hours.

Both of Sony’s new sets of headphones will start shipping in April, even if the manufacturer hasn’t yet mentioned anything about the price.

Google Music and Android in-app billing in tests http://www.htlounge.net/art/15183/google-music-and-android-in-app-billing-in-tests.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15183/google-music-and-android-in-app-billing-in-tests.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 19:19:12 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15183 According to tips, Google Music has finally passed internal tests. Google’s staff is using the streaming service for the web and Android for day-to-day tasks and this is usually a clear sign that it is almost complete. As CNET was told, a single vital component is still missing for the release, but it was not specified what that was.

The problem is supposed to be the negotiations with music labels, probably still ongoing. As Google is asking, the service should focus on a cloud media locker which would store not only tracks that were bought or subscribed to from Google Music directly, but also other items that would constitute a personal collection. Labels have not bee sure as to how to continue or they have tried to double-dip on revenues by asking extra to remote play music already owned by customers.

An attempt had been made to release Google Music last year, but deals lacking have made the launch impossible.

There was serious and constant pressure to continue with this service, especially from Apple. The company has repeatedly stressed that it planned to use the datacenter for MobileMe and iTunes in the spring for what many people have considered to be cloud media services. The strategy would be rather similar to that of Google and would permit access to iTunes music libraries from iOS-based devices and most probable iTunes on the web and other computers.

If rumors of an iOS-focused event in April are true, then Apple could beat Google. The latter holds special events frequently, but already has Google I/O looming in spring.

iSkin intros EarTones earphone/microphone combo http://www.htlounge.net/art/15177/iskin-intros-eartones-earphonemicrophone-combo.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15177/iskin-intros-eartones-earphonemicrophone-combo.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 19:09:18 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15177 iSkin, the Mac accessory manufacturer, has recently released a new line of earphones; they are called EarTones and benefit from integrated mics which are specially designed for iOS devices, but still work well with Windows and Mac computers that use programs such as iChat, FaceTime and Skype. The microphone features iPod and call control on iOS devices (including Apple’s iPad 2) and the earphones offer several innovations, such as a flexible neck to give the earbuds a better fit and an anti-bacterial coating.

iSkin claims that their new earbuds and mic come with Microban, which is an anti-bacterial coating inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria or fungus, but also featuring an industry-first flexible neck (this permits the earbuds to flex when inserted for even greater comfort). The microphone works with multiple programs which respond to voice command (for example, the iOS Google application) and supports as well the voice control features of Apple’s iPod Touch and iPhone.

iSkin’s EarTones are available in a variety of color combinations, including Black/Red, Black/Black, Black/White, Blue/White, Purple/White and Pink/Black. Even if technical specs have not yet been published by the company, the sound quality is described on iSkin’s website as offering a vast dynamic array of high-definition audio. The new EarTones can already be ordered for a price of $40.

Zune players to be killed off for good by Microsoft http://www.htlounge.net/art/15019/zune-players-to-be-killed-off-for-good-by-microsoft.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15019/zune-players-to-be-killed-off-for-good-by-microsoft.html#comments Wed, 16 Mar 2011 21:37:10 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15019 A Bloomberg source said that Microsoft would put an end to the history of its Zune hardware by phasing it out for ever. Following this strategy, Microsoft would still sell the current Zune HD but would end its production once the device is considered obsolete. However, the Zune software, as well as the Zune Marketplace key would still remain and would get content for the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7. There is no know timeline and Microsoft has not commented on its plans.

In November 2006, the Zune was launched in an attempt Microsoft made to replicate the successful release of the iPod. The company had ignored Apple’s device until it literally dominated the market. The Zune was a complete policy change in Microsoft’s strategy as it dropped the Windows model meant to reach the MP3 player market and made an Apple-like device with an intuitive interface and easy synchronizing. A series of new features came with the Zune, such as the concept of social networking and automated Wi-Fi synchronizing.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, had hoped that his company would be at least the second in the MP3 player market. Although Microsoft intended to beat the competition, it recognized this would not be so easy. The truth is that the company never succeeded to have more than two percent of the respective market. This was due to a lack of really standout features and the slow upgrade pace made very difficult the Zune’s life in competition against Sony or SanDisk. Most of the initial gains came from companies using Windows Media Player for synchronizing and PlaysForSure copy protection for musical content.

It is not certain that the portable platform has its life finished and it is possible for it to have a new life in WP7, with its media player application being Zune-branded and sharing similarities with the interface of the Zune HD. Its success will depend on whether or not partners like Nokia and others can push Windows Phone 7 into the mainstream some years after Apple had released smartphones with media playback like its iPhone.

Ludacris and Signeo to team up for headphone lineup http://www.htlounge.net/art/15008/ludacris-and-signeo-to-team-up-for-headphone-lineup.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15008/ludacris-and-signeo-to-team-up-for-headphone-lineup.html#comments Wed, 16 Mar 2011 21:24:33 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15008 A new range of headphones, called Soul by Ludacris, has recently been unveiled by Signeo USA. This range comes as an alternative to Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones and is made up of five models. The SL300 Powered Noise Cancelling headphones are the range-toppers; it benefits from powered amplification thanks to its two AAA batteries.

Soul by Ludacris headphones are compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod; a detachable cord with an inline remote is included, as well as a gold-plated 3.5mm connector and adapter for quarter-inch jacks. Headphones are sold under a $300 price tag.

The SL150 headset lacks the amplifier, but offers the same features as the SL300. These headphones are sold for $200. The SL100 headphones are slightly smaller, including the drivers and cost $150; they have similar features as those of the SL150 set. The range also includes the SL99 earbuds, which sport gold-plated connectors, three ear tips, as well as tangle-resistant cables; they are compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod, retailing at $100. The SL40 earbuds are priced at $69 and offer slightly lower specs than the SL99 set; however, they offer the same features.

All Soul by Ludacris headphones come along with carrying cases and are expected to start shipping at an unspecified point in the future.

Apple in talks to give users repeat music downloads from iTunes http://www.htlounge.net/art/14885/apple-in-talks-to-give-users-repeat-music-downloads-from-itunes.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14885/apple-in-talks-to-give-users-repeat-music-downloads-from-itunes.html#comments Sat, 05 Mar 2011 20:57:40 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14885 Multiple sources claimed a few days ago that Apple was in talks with labels for an already requested deal which would allow users to download an iTunes song they have purchased as many times as they want. Negotiations with both major labels and independents are supposed to give iTunes users the same rights they receive at some stores when they buy a track and receive the permission to download it again on how many devices they want, including iOS devices. Bloomberg found out that the deal could be concluded by the middle of this year or in time for the launch of the iPhone 5.

This approach would finally provide customers with a true option allowing them to restore their purchases. Apple often lets users repeatedly download the tracks they have purchased in case of wiping a computer out and not having a backup available, but this is usually a one-time exception. Unlimited downloads would not be the same as a true backup. However, it would help buyers to be reassured with a safety solution in case an accident happens.

iOS users would also get more independence. Apple plans to activate iPhones and iPads in-store but sometimes does not warn customers that they have to regularly synchronize with iTunes on a computer in order to backup the content. Users who buy songs through iOS services directly and do not synchronize often risk losing whole collections in case of loss the device or when they have to restore it. If they get repeat download rights, the need of a computer backup would be reduced.

For regular users also, this permission would offer a similar flexibility versus what they have now in the iOS and Mac App Stores, as they could skip the entire synchronization process if it was not received outside of iTunes.

A source which indicated the iTunes deal also says Apple is planning a MobileMe media locker to go free, allowing users to download or stream an entire collection on iOS hardware and computers. It would include any stored content but not necessarily bought from iTunes. Such a service was prominently absent from the launch of the iPad 2, but Apple has made a promise to perform a major iTunes and MobileMe network capacity upgrade during this spring, which would include just a service like the one mentioned above.

Apple’s application iTunes juggernaut is ten years old http://www.htlounge.net/art/14478/apple%e2%80%99s-application-itunes-juggernaut-is-ten-years-old.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14478/apple%e2%80%99s-application-itunes-juggernaut-is-ten-years-old.html#comments Fri, 21 Jan 2011 22:47:31 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14478 The iTunes application of Apple is already ten years old, as it was first launched on the 9th of January 2001, nine months ahead of launching the first iPod in October the same year. The application has reached some major milestones while evolving over the past decade. It was first available as a Mac OS 9-dedicated application meant to help organizing digital music collections, but its functionality has expanded later significantly. As a result, it can now support TV shows, movies, podcasts, internet radio, iTunes U, as well as App and book downloads. The iTunes continuous development has significantly contributed to Apple’s success with both the iPod line and the franchises of the iPhone and iPad.

Apple launched the iTunes Music Store in 2003 with 200,000 songs priced at 99 cents each. Similar to the recent launch of Apple’s Mac App Store, one million downloads were registered in the first week. But there were over 25 million song downloads by December 2003 and 500 million downloads by 2005. In October 2005, iTunes expanded by including both TV shows and music videos. After another year, in February, iTunes had already reached one billion songs sold. September 2006 brought the first full-length movie catalog of iTunes.

One year later, Apple brought the iPhone. The tremendous success of the iPhone massively contributed to iTunes’ two billion song downloads, 1.3 million movie downloads and about 50 million TV shows it sold. By that time, the iTunes system was being fueled by more than 140 million iPods. July 2008 saw the addition of Apple’s App store to the iTunes juggernaut. It was about a year and a half after the release of the iPhone. In July 2009, the first anniversary of the App store was celebrated with more than 1.5 million applications sold. 2010 marked the ten billionth song download for iTunes’ ninth anniversary.

When looking back at all those milestones reached during the past decade of existence of iTunes, it becomes obvious that Apple’s astonishing comeback was significantly helped by the genial guidance of its CEO Steve Jobs.

This year 2011, Apple has a market cap in excess of $300 billion and therefore becomes the second most valuable company on the whole planet, behind Exxon Mobil only.

The role of iTunes in all these achievements cannot in any way be minimized. Apple’s application is easy to use and its seamless content transfer, as well as its expansion of entertainment choices, have transformed it into a redoubtable challenge for competitors around the world.
