A report from Hollywood Reporter suggested that the company, owned by CBS, decided to skip the previous seasons of Californication and Dexter when the existing Netflix deal expires in the end of the year. The pulled episodes will continue to be available for web-based streaming, but only from Showtime’s Anytime streaming service.

In spite of the decision to remove some original episodes from recent series, Showtime may be continuing the general relationship with Netflix. As part of this recent deal, Netflix will continue to have access to some older shows like Sleeper Cell or The Tudors. CBS has established another deal for some older series, which include Family Ties, Star Trek, Frasier and Cheers.

However, some recent reports hint that Netflix will try an incursion into the world of original content; the company acquired exclusive distribution rights to the future drama House of Cards featuring Kevin Spacey. However, Ted Sarandos, chief executive, downplayed the deal and claimed that it is consistent with Netflix’s current strategy.

Facebook and Warner are trying movie rentals with The Dark Knight http://www.htlounge.net/art/14970/facebook-and-warner-are-trying-movie-rentals-with-the-dark-knight.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14970/facebook-and-warner-are-trying-movie-rentals-with-the-dark-knight.html#comments Sun, 13 Mar 2011 22:17:05 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14970 Facebook has recently tested its own direct media service through a team-up with Warner. Users from the USA who visit the Dark Knight fan page are able to rent the movie by simply using 30 Facebook Credits (which means almost $3) and watch it directly from the social network. Viewers benefit from the same rights as they do if they use iTunes or other rentals, including full-screen playback, unlimited views for 48 hours afterwards and even the possibility to resume from where they left off.

Moreover, Warner has promised that renters are still able to manage their usual social stream while playing the movie. The movie studio has promised more titles in the future; full purchases will eventually be attached to a Facebook account.

This rollout does not represent a full video service for Facebook, but at least hints that Facebook is willing to offer support for full media purchases from its partners. Facebook is currently one of the largest video services in the whole world but, the same as YouTube, depends mostly on amateur video; moreover, the ad hits from views rather than commercial content. Warner’s recent experiment opens the door to studios to start offering their entire catalogs, even if the current approach may lead to a fragmented service where users need to find studios or movies themselves.

Facebook’s commerce has been mostly dominated by web games from Zynga and even other developers. Music, for example, has usually engaged referrals to outsiders, despite its importance to Facebook (through dedicated services, such as iLike).

Netflix executive hired by Google for TV and movie projects http://www.htlounge.net/art/13518/netflix-executive-hired-by-google-for-tv-and-movie-projects.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13518/netflix-executive-hired-by-google-for-tv-and-movie-projects.html#comments Wed, 22 Sep 2010 13:09:33 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13518 Google is believed to deepen its plans to enter the TV show and on-demand movie industry through the Google TV service. The company has hired Robert Kyncl, an executive from Netflix, according to news from AllThingsDigital. Kyncl has recently left Netflix and is now vice president of Content Partnership at Google, as sources said.

However, while Netflix has confirmed that Kyncl is no longer working for the company, Google is not admitting openly his appointment.

Kyncl has helped many content deals during its seven-year stay at Netflix, including the recent project involving the streaming of Epix movies.

The company has a preliminary movie rental service already but has been limited to foreign and independent titles that do not attract as much as major content that is available through iTunes, Amazon VOD, Netflix and other established services. Rumors are that Google is planning a worldwide store but it needs staff with negotiating skills for deals that neither Google nor YouTube have had in the past.

Vimeo’s movie service extended onto iPhone and Android platforms http://www.htlounge.net/art/9473/vimeo%e2%80%99s-movie-service-extended-onto-iphone-and-android-platforms.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/9473/vimeo%e2%80%99s-movie-service-extended-onto-iphone-and-android-platforms.html#comments Wed, 18 Nov 2009 12:42:01 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=9473 Vimeo announced its intention of extending the movie service onto platforms like Google Android or iPhone and iPod Touch. The whole site content has been converted to formats appropriate to mobile devices. According to Vimeo’s director Blake Whitman, this is only the beginning of offering iPhone support to Plus members, as well as an application in the near future.

Initial conversions are limited to a number of videos picked by Vimeo. Plus members will be able to opt to transcoding of their video content into smartphone formats. Whitman says that users of iPhones, iPods and Android devices will be able to see a special mobile version for any video page that has been re-encoded. Content for Android and iPhone is available through the site’s mobile section. Blake Whitman has warned, however, that some videos that work on iPhone and iPod might create some problems on Android in the beginning.

Unusual Deal – Movies on Flash Memory http://www.htlounge.net/art/9181/unusual-deal-movies-on-flash-memory.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/9181/unusual-deal-movies-on-flash-memory.html#comments Wed, 04 Nov 2009 15:45:05 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=9181 Movies available on SD cards or USB flash drives may sound strange enough but this is the subject of a most recent deal concluded between Kingston and Paramount. The latter’s movies could be sold on such media in the near future. The two partners didn’t provide any details on the formats but it’s certain that the movies will come both in bundles and individually.

Providing movies on other storage than optical could contribute to a wider spreading of video productions to systems not provided with DVD or Blu-ray drives, such as handhelds or netbooks. In order to fit into 2GB of memory or even less, movies will be in standard definition.

The two companies didn’t mention the release date yet.

Verizon – the First Provider of EpixHD Streaming Video http://www.htlounge.net/art/9091/verizon-%e2%80%93-the-first-provider-of-epixhd-streaming-video.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/9091/verizon-%e2%80%93-the-first-provider-of-epixhd-streaming-video.html#comments Tue, 03 Nov 2009 21:37:47 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=9091 EpixHD is offering recent movies in high definition video with no ads included – which is a remarkable thing – and is a viable and challenging alternative to Internet-based TV sources. Other competing services, such as On Demand Online from Comcast have been limited to only trial markets. EpixHD is surely a competitor of online movie services which have nothing to do with conventional TV, such as Netflix, iTunes or Hulu.

Verizon has made the step of becoming the first provider to offer EpixHD streaming video to its users as a part of its service. Epix’s on-demand channel added to a FiOS TV package is $10 per month and addresses those users who have FiOS Internet connection as well as a FiOS TV subscription with the Epix TV channel. They can watch an unlimited amount of movies at up to 720-pixel. For the beginning, 150 movie titles will be in rotation online, but 15,000 titles will be available, including both old and new productions. Producers such as MGM, Paramount or Lionsgate will add their most recent movies to this service.

Michael Jackson’s “This is it” coming in October 30 http://www.htlounge.net/art/7815/michael-jacksons-this-is-it-coming-in-october-30.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/7815/michael-jacksons-this-is-it-coming-in-october-30.html#comments Mon, 14 Sep 2009 14:04:02 +0000 monica http://www.htlounge.net/?p=7815 Everyone on this Earth knows Michael Jackson and almost everyone knows what “This is it” was supposed to be and what it became …

For the few people who have no clue, I will be more specific: “This is it” was supposed to be the King of Pop’s last shows on stage, as an entertainer, a series of 50 concerts in London, “the final curtain call” as Michael announced. But as the Nature didn’t agree with MJ’s wish, “This is it” is going to be a movie based on 80 hours of MJ’s last show rehearsal and footage behind the scenes.

The movie will be released in October 30 and you can watch it in the cinemas all over the World.

If you want to watch it at home you must wait until 2010, when it will probably be launched on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

The film which will be released in less than two mounts is produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Pictures.  Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Mitchell Beckloff announced the court’ authorization for Sony to edit the “rehearsal tape”. The negotiation between Sony and Michael Jackson Estate and AEG Live (the producer of the London concert series) for the taped rehearsal rights would be at least USD 60 M and after Sony covers the cost of making the movie, the rest of the movie’s revenues would be split between the 3 companies via a complex formula.

Kenny Ortega, the director of the London’s concert series, will also direct the movie, as his representatives at Paradigm Talent Agency confirmed. Ortega, who also directed “High School Musical”, said “The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into the project”.

The rehearsal was taped in HD quality and in the movie it is used the greatest IT equipment, all of this in order for the public to see magic effects, just how the King of Pop deserves. The movie’s trial has already been shown to the public, yesterday, at Video Music Awards in New York.
