Thus, the company attained a new peak of 5.4 percent of market share, although its gains relative to iOS were small. Its combined mobile platform, lead by the iPhone, jumped about 16.5 percent and grabbed 2.24 percent of the entire web traffic.

Windows kept on declining and reached a new relative low of 88.91 percent, almost exclusively affected by Mac and iOS gains in market share. Although Android’s gains were not tracked, it had 0.66 percent share, or perhaps less than a third.

Microsoft’s strong point was undoubtedly Internet Explorer 9, which has more than doubled its share compared to March and reached 7.46 percent of all browsers for Windows. However, the gain did not help Microsoft as an entity, since Internet Explorer went down to 55.11 percent.

Apple’s Safari, unusually, brought most of the gain, as its rise of more than 0.5 percent made it establish a record of 7.15 percent. Meanwhile, Chrome had a slower gain of about one third of a point and hit 11.94 percent. Mozilla’s Firefox had a slight decline, hitting 21.63 percent.

It was not in the intention of NetApplications to explain Apple’s gain. Some factors as the sustained sales of the Verizon iPhone and the iPad 2 equally are believed to have helped iOS. The quick adoption of Microsoft’s Windows 7 as well as the calculated optimization of the latest operating system contributed directly to Internet Explorer 9’s gains.

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh in original packaging on Ebay http://www.htlounge.net/art/15236/twentieth-anniversary-macintosh-in-original-packaging-on-ebay.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15236/twentieth-anniversary-macintosh-in-original-packaging-on-ebay.html#comments Fri, 01 Apr 2011 10:33:14 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15236 A rare, still-in-box and never used Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh has appeared on Ebay for auction. The device is designed by present-day head of Apple design Jonathan Ive. It is one of the 11,601 computers sold outside Apple. When opened for inspection, all components, accessories and key board boxes, were found in their original packaging.

The computer was introduced in 1997, at a price of $7,500. It was illustrating both the concepts and the philosophy that would dominate the future design aesthetic of Apple after the comeback of its CEO Steve Jobs. Some elements like the unusual vertically-oriented and thin all-in-one design, the exceptional high quality of the sound system, the optical drive vertically-mounted, the active-matrix LCD screen considered the best at the time, the detachable trackpad replacing the common mouse and last, but not least, the luxurious, high-quality finish, have deeply impressed the large public.

The industrial design generated enthusiastic reviews although consumers did not appreciate the high price of the computer. As a matter of fact, the price dropped to half the original listing soon enough and even went under $2,000 before the limited production run ended. The look and sound of the device were quite revolutionary for that time, but the internal parts were almost standard. Off-the-rack parts were used that represented very little advancement over the cheaper desktop Macs already existing. The computer was mainly targeting at executives and wealthy customers. An audio buzzing that affected a few units has been fixed about a year after the device’s release.

The Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, or the TAM, as it was called, only can run as high as Mac OS 9.1 and cannot be upgraded to OS X. However, many devices are still in use, an important part of them thanks to later 3G upgrade options which were implemented by third-party companies.

The unit on auction is located in Keller, Texas and shipping it will require $35 in the United States or overseas. The only indication of the twenty years passed since the unit has been made is that its original batteries have expanded, although they do not leak, as the owner claims.

The computer is being sold “as-is” because testing is impossible, but all components as well as a full set of accessories being part of the original package are still in the original containers. The bidding price on Monday morning was $28.13 and only a few people had viewed the auction.

Mac sales may reach 3.7 million during March-quarter http://www.htlounge.net/art/15014/mac-sales-may-reach-3-7-million-during-march-quarter.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15014/mac-sales-may-reach-3-7-million-during-march-quarter.html#comments Wed, 16 Mar 2011 21:28:03 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15014 According to Gene Munster, Piper Jaffray analyst, Apple is expected to sell between 3.5 and 3.7 million Macs in the fiscal quarter ending in March. The estimation is based on recently-published NPD data, which seems to show Mac sales up 16 percent year-over-year for January and February. If persistent, this figure could give Apple 3.6 million units for the entire quarter. Munster commented that the growth is below a 22 percent agreed expectation and towards the bottom of the analyst’s own predicted array of 15 to 25 percent.

Munster pointed out that a factor disturbing sales could have been the release of updated MacBook Pros in the end of February. Apple may have to have drawn down delayed shipments and old stock, creating a short period in which quite few MacBook Pros were being sold. Simultaneously, the NPD numbers do not reflect extra sales new MacBook Pros could have contributed to.

The Piper Jaffray analyst also commented that iPad sales are tracking with anticipations. However, iPods are down even more than 11 percent year-over-year, beyond a previous prediction of 5 to 10 percent. Results may reach between 9.8 and 10.3 million in sales, roughly in line with an agreed view of 10.2 million.

Apple’s Safe Deposit Box application to be built-in Carbonite for Mac http://www.htlounge.net/art/14725/apple%e2%80%99s-safe-deposit-box-application-to-be-built-in-carbonite-for-mac.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14725/apple%e2%80%99s-safe-deposit-box-application-to-be-built-in-carbonite-for-mac.html#comments Wed, 23 Feb 2011 11:49:40 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14725 A cloud backup feature for Mac OS X Lion could appear following an Apple quietly filed patent. The application is labeled Safe Deposit Box in the recently filed patent and would, as a minimum, allow users to drag and drop files into a space optionally encrypted, which would be able to keep them safe without requiring whole-volume protection like FileVault. However, users would have the option not only to keep local copies, but also push them out to a “server bank or cloud storage” to achieve off-site backup.

Users could also prioritize files by using a rating system capable of automatically determining the level of security and backup they can get. Security is also expected to be relatively fine-grained. It would be capable of locking down files on a basic level with encryption and also could intentionally alter the file name and associate it only with the original for a verified owner. Users would be given a degree of flexibility related to how long the Safe Deposit Box stays open by using a timeout monitor which would force them to login again after a certain time.

Apple, as in other cases of patents it filed, may not necessarily use the described technology, but the specification of a Mac OS X application hints at a possible use. The patent was filed in August 2009, at the time of the Snow Leopard release, and may be just in time for the release of Lion in the summer of 2011.

The new service may reveal the need for cloud backup tools like Carbonite on the Mac and may give Apple an edge over its rival Microsoft. Windows 7 users benefit from official tools like SkyDrive, but do not have a full OS-layer remote backup yet.

USB 3.0 diver by LaCie to equip Macs http://www.htlounge.net/art/14090/usb-3-0-diver-by-lacie-to-equip-macs.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14090/usb-3-0-diver-by-lacie-to-equip-macs.html#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 20:54:56 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14090 A new Mac USB 3.0 driver has been released by the storage maker LaCie. Currently, no Mac is shipping with a USB 3.0-ready port as a standard option and therefore the driver can only support accessories on Mac Pros equipped with a LaCie PCI Express adapter or MacBook Pros provided with the ExpressCard/34 adapter of the company. Mac OS X 10.5 is required in both cases.

According to LaCie, speeds go up to 130MBps in the case of single drives and 220MBps when dual hard drives are used. Several models are compatible so far. They include the Minimus and USB 3.0 versions of the d2, 2big, Rikiki and Rugged.

MacBook Air will still have Core 2 but a lower price http://www.htlounge.net/art/13873/macbook-air-will-still-have-core-2-but-a-lower-price.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13873/macbook-air-will-still-have-core-2-but-a-lower-price.html#comments Tue, 19 Oct 2010 14:09:29 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13873 The 11.6-inch MacBook Air of Apple is believed to have a modest update of its processor but will compensate in other aspects. It will still have a Core 2 Duo processor, most probably like the existing S series in current Air, but there will certainly be an upgrade to the GeForce 320M (MCP89) for improved graphics. The price is expected to be significantly lower than what is asked now for the 13-inch system, i.e. $1,499.

According to sources talking to CNET, a longer battery life is also expected for the new version of MacBok but it is not know by how much. The battery life of current 13-inch MacBooks reaches ten hours. The Air however normally run on a lower-power chip and therefore do not need to run longer than the current five hours. An all-SSD storage range is believed to improve the overall responsiveness, even for the basic model of MacBook Air.

Of course, those users who wanted a design with a Core i3, i5 or i7 would be disappointed to see an older processor in the new model, but this is the result of a legal fight between NVIDIA and Intel over licenses of the chipset. NVIDIA has been sued by Intel who claimed that the former’s license related to system chipsets does not include any processor with a built-in controller for the memory that rules out all iX processors and newer designs for Atom. In turn, NVIDIA has countersued Intel and claimed that this one has intentionally misinterpreted the contract in order to exclude a faster competitor.

Apple’s new system is meant to be an important element in the company’s strategy. It is intended to boost the already soaring market share and equally to define the role of Mac in relation to the iPad. It is notorious that Macs dominate the premium market for notebooks. They have seen a widening gap between the cheapest model at $999 and decreasing average prices for most of the other models. The decline of the netbooks is obvious, but ultraportables with sizes of 11 and 13 inches using Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low Voltage chips (CULV) have contributed to bridge the gap thanks to keeping a small profile and costing only a little more than netbooks or full-size notebooks with basic features.

Microsoft prepares Zune for Mac to synchronize Windows Phone 7 http://www.htlounge.net/art/13845/microsoft-prepares-zune-for-mac-to-synchronize-windows-phone-7.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13845/microsoft-prepares-zune-for-mac-to-synchronize-windows-phone-7.html#comments Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:31:01 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13845 In a Twitter update, the Windows Phone marketing lead in the United Kingdom, Oded Ran, claimed that there would be a Zune client available for the Mac to synchronize Windows Phone 7 devices. The executive did not go into details but said that customers could Zune on the Mac to synchronize the phones. He also promised more details in the near future.

Microsoft had said that some form of software to synchronize WP7 with the Mac should exist, but it had been always believed that this would be a third-party application or a conduit application, such as Missing Sync, to pull information from Macs. On the contrary, Ran’s statements imply a full media player, long being considered but never too close to be released. Microsoft is believed to have maintained the application off the Mac due to insignificant returns from Zune players support on the original iPod. Windows Phone 7 instead may determine a reconsideration of the case since more people are supposed to own such a device for work.

It is not obvious whether every feature would work. Microsoft has never formally enabled protected Windows Media tracks necessary for a Zune Pass. In this case, customers would be limited to downloads of those tracks but would have to resort to a Zune-supporting device or to the web player to stream instead of playing them straight from the Zune software. Also affected could be Zune movies.

Microsoft initiates a campaign on Facebook with PC vs. Mac application http://www.htlounge.net/art/13614/microsoft-initiates-a-campaign-on-facebook-with-pc-vs-mac-application.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13614/microsoft-initiates-a-campaign-on-facebook-with-pc-vs-mac-application.html#comments Thu, 30 Sep 2010 14:24:49 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13614 Microsoft has begun an anti-Mac campaign on its Australian fan page of social networking with the PC vs. Mac Facebook application. The company hopes to interrupt the stereotypes created by Apple ads related to Windows users by inviting visitors to guess each other’s computer choices. They are also invited to take quizzes and test their allegiances, but the questions do not have much in common with computers. Visitors have the chance to win a Pavilion dv6 notebook as a prize for an essay on how they would escape a desert island by using Windows 7.

The campaign is not directly confrontational, although the nature of the fan page makes less probable that Mac users would visit the web page.

Lately, Microsoft has scaled back the campaigns against Apple’s Mac in traditional formats. This happened partly because Windows 7 has given it more reasons to be confident than the frequently blamed Vista. The TV spots of the company have been accused of containing intentional misleading statements. For example, in one case, an actor has been paid to create an image of the Mac as being more expensive than it really was. Payments for analyst reports designed to favor Microsoft over its rival Apple have also been made.

Supplier orders for Apple extended to early 2011 http://www.htlounge.net/art/13560/supplier-orders-for-apple-extended-to-early-2011.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13560/supplier-orders-for-apple-extended-to-early-2011.html#comments Sat, 25 Sep 2010 20:54:58 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13560 Apple has so heavy device orders that it is asking its suppliers for orders to be shipped in early 2011, according to sources from assemblers and chipset producers. The main products of the company, the iPad, MacBook, iPhone and iPod still have a strong demand, so that Apple is scheduling orders into 2011. The sources did not specify any numbers or which models would the most affected. Anonymous contacts belonging to the phone industry said that iPhone orders would be expected to go up in the fall.

The news is still unverified but backs a report from Kaufmann Bros. that estimated up to 5.7 million iPads shipped this summer, 11.5 million iPhones and 3.8 million Macs. All three figures would be Apple records.

An uptick for HTC and the resurgence of Motorola as a smartphone competitor were expected to continue by the end of the year, with five or six new Android-based models to be ready by the end of 2010. What this would mean is hard to know, but both the Droid 2 World Edition and the international Milestone 2 are supposed to be arriving by the end of this year.
