Both the Cinema 3D D41P and D42P use passive 3D which is flicker-free, as well as cheaper to run without the need for any expensive active shutter glasses. All these are able to optionally convert 2D images to 3D.

All of LG’s four new displays benefit from 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratios, a 5ms pixel response time, a 1080p native resolution, but also from a 250-nit brightness in 2D or a 100-nit brightness with 3D. The entry 23-inch LG D2341P starts off with only VGA and DVI inputs. The 21.5-inch D2242P, 23-inch D2342P and 25-inch D2542P add, however, an HDMI 1.4 input to take in both 3D and 2D video from a PS3 or any other non-traditional source for a computer screen.

LG’s new displays work with Windows PCs, Macs and other ordinary platforms. Koreans get access to both LG lines starting April 26, while the worldwide release, starting with Europe, is expected from early June onwards.

LG Optimus 3D, approved by FCC, joins T-Mobile instead of G2X http://www.htlounge.net/art/15171/lg-optimus-3d-approved-by-fcc-joins-t-mobile-instead-of-g2x.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15171/lg-optimus-3d-approved-by-fcc-joins-t-mobile-instead-of-g2x.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 18:55:07 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15171 LG’s Optimus 3D has received the approval of the FCC. It is mentioned in the FCC documentation as the LG P920. The GSM radio of the LG Optimus 3D will support the AWS 1,700MHz network spectrum of T-Mobile. It has also been confirmed on AT&T’s network, but with a different branding, as it will receive the name LG Thrill 4G.

T-Mobile has announced to bring an adaptation of the LG Optimus 2X, named the T-Mobile G2X, as well as the LG G-Slate to market during this spring. However, it has not mentioned the Optimus 3D, while AT&T had announced the device as the LG Thrill 4G at CTIA. Therefore, it was a surprise to see that a model of the LG Optimus 3D would be compatible with T-Mobile’s network, while everybody expected the Optimus G2X to reach the FCC for approval.

The Optimus 3D is equipped with a Texas Instruments OMAP4 dual-core processor, which is clocked at 1GHz. It is said that its graphic core is twice as powerful as the correspondent of its “nearest competitor”, which was, at the time of the announcement, the NVIDIA Tegra 2. It sports up to four times as many decoders which allow it to have the graphics power required for its 3D viewing and recording expected performances.

Extreme demand for LG’s Optimus V, new logo for the Nexus S 4G http://www.htlounge.net/art/15047/extreme-demand-for-lg%e2%80%99s-optimus-v-new-logo-for-the-nexus-s-4g.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15047/extreme-demand-for-lg%e2%80%99s-optimus-v-new-logo-for-the-nexus-s-4g.html#comments Wed, 23 Mar 2011 17:44:05 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15047 LG’s Optimus V from Virgin Mobile has seen a surprisingly high amount of demand based on first-hand looks. Each retailer carrying the ultra-budget Android 2.2 handset, including Target, Best Buy and Walmart, has remained backordered for at least the last two weeks. Android and Me didn’t check; however, Virgin’s online store also lists this as being temporarily out of stock.

The Optimus V is expected to be sheer to be in absolute demand through its very low price. Being priced at $150 without any contract, this may be the least expensive Android handheld in the USA. Virgin’s plans seem to be less expensive at only $25 a month for unlimited data, 300 minutes and unlimited texting. Sprint sells the same mobile phone, as the Nexus S 4G got further support. The Sprint Users forum member who has leaked the Xoom for Sprint, also supposed to have inside access, has been using the handset’s official logo as his own avatar.

The Nexus S 4G is expected to be a straightforward port of T-Mobile’s edition with WiMAX on Sprint’s network, but the same four-inch curved Super AMOLED display, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, NFC wireless and both VGA front and five-megapixel rear cameras.

Sony confirms PS3s seized by custom officers in Europe following LG patent fight http://www.htlounge.net/art/14915/sony-confirms-ps3s-seized-by-custom-officers-in-europe-following-lg-patent-fight.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14915/sony-confirms-ps3s-seized-by-custom-officers-in-europe-following-lg-patent-fight.html#comments Tue, 08 Mar 2011 18:33:23 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14915 Sony confirmed a few days ago that shipments of PlayStation 3 game consoles had been seized in the Netherlands by custom officers, following a court injunction. As a consequence of LG winning the case, which said the console had violated patents held by the electronics maker from South Korea with its Blu-ray drive, a Dutch court decided an import ban for ten days and therefore tens of thousands of consoles have been seized.

A technology-sharing agreement between Sony and LG has not been renewed by the former after expiring three years ago, Reuters sources said. The two companies have sued each other and Sony filed a complaint against LG in the United States International Trade Commission last year. It tried to block the Rumor Touch of LG as well as other smartphones from the United States.

LG did the same thing in February, with respect to the Blu-ray video technology used in the PS3.

The Netherlands is an important entry point for the European sales of Sony. The company has to find an alternative entry into the market, but its sales are not expected to be seriously affected by the temporary Dutch ban.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 banned in Europe because of LG http://www.htlounge.net/art/14794/sony%e2%80%99s-playstation-3-banned-in-europe-because-of-lg.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14794/sony%e2%80%99s-playstation-3-banned-in-europe-because-of-lg.html#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 21:35:16 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14794 Sony has recently faced a major problem as LG landed a preliminary restriction, banning the PlayStation 3 from being sold in Europe. Moreover, a civil court in The Hague decided that and PlayStation 3s imported in Europe will be confiscated by government officials for a minimum of the next ten days. The Guardian declared that an important point of import for Europe, the Netherlands, has already confiscated tens of thousands of PlayStation 3s and that Sony watched hundreds of thousands of its consoles blocked from reaching store shelves.

LG is currently involved in a patent dispute over Blu-ray, which has expanded worldwide, including the US and Europe. The PlayStation 3 has been used as a forced way to push for an agreement. The complaint is, in fact, a response to Sony take legal action against LG over phone patents.

A quick agreement could prove to be very important for Sony to avoid a crisis. Even if the company’s claim is still unconfirmed, the Guardian has heard that Sony may only have two to three weeks of PlaySTation 3s in stock in Europe, before running dry. If Sony can’t lift the restriction, the Wii and Xbox 360 may take a commanding lead in European gaming, as customers will have no choice but buying Microsoft or Nintendo products, in order to have a modern console.

Sony hasn’t officially commented anything, but it is probably investigating the ban causes.

LG, Motorola and others allegedly copied Oracle code http://www.htlounge.net/art/14505/lg-motorola-and-others-allegedly-copied-oracle-code.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14505/lg-motorola-and-others-allegedly-copied-oracle-code.html#comments Wed, 26 Jan 2011 20:35:48 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14505 An investigation conducted by Florian Mueller has shown that important Android phone producers were using allegedly copied code from Java. Source code distributions for Droid Pro and other Droid versions belonging to Motorola, Samsung’s Galaxy devices that include the Galaxy Tab and the Ally and Optimus devices from LG all incorporate at least a part of the code. According to Mueller, even if the above mentioned devices do not necessarily contain potentially patent violating code in the on-device version, their simple presence on the sites of the phone designers may be sufficient for causing legal troubles.

Other companies like Dell and HTC do not have the files in question. They have not probably been aware of the potential risk, but the omission is somehow unusual. The phone makers who have the code have probably been unaware too but could have supported Oracle’s legal complaint against Google without intending it.

Mueller went on to reject claims that Oracle’s code was attached strictly to test files which were not used for production purposes. He said that the code was general security code that could be used easily for production hardware. No matter how the code is being used or if it is being used elsewhere, its presence in an official context is enough for a judge to rule it as infringing.

The investigation could affect Google and help Oracle in its accusations of copying and could put some of the responsibility on phone manufacturers for illegal distribution of the code, but it is not certain that they could be legally held responsible for it. Google has not answered the accusations so far. it has however accused Oracle of false representation of the code for obtaining a better case.

If successful with its lawsuit, Oracle may push Google to pay royalties for using Java-related code in its Android 2.2 devices shipped or may force a change in the code in order to avoid legal consequences. It is known that Google is already dealing with patent challenges from Microsoft and Apple, following lawsuits against phone makers.

LG Optimus One reaches the one million sales milestone in 40 days http://www.htlounge.net/art/14186/lg-optimus-one-reaches-the-one-million-sales-milestone-in-40-days.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14186/lg-optimus-one-reaches-the-one-million-sales-milestone-in-40-days.html#comments Tue, 23 Nov 2010 09:36:54 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14186 The LG Optimus One has sold one million units, reaching an important milestone, according to the Korean company. Reaching this milestone only took the company 40 days after going on sale throughout the United States, Europe and a significant part of Asia-Pacific. The new device runs Android Froyo (2.2) and has been selling at a rate of 25,000 units per day since its launch October.

This news is welcome for LG, which has been struggling to keep its market share intact after seeing its profits for the last financial year plunging 99 percent, from $805.6 million to only $6.7 million. Criticism has been addressed to LG for maintaining Windows Mobile devices a long time after many of its competitors, such as HTC and Samsung, had switched their strategy towards Android.

The Optimus One still continues to have strong sales and its availability is expected to expand soon to more than 120 carriers and other partners worldwide.

NVIDIA says Google is behind Apple on tablets http://www.htlounge.net/art/14172/nvidia-says-google-is-behind-apple-on-tablets.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14172/nvidia-says-google-is-behind-apple-on-tablets.html#comments Fri, 19 Nov 2010 19:53:54 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14172 Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA’s chief, in a conference call dedicated to the discussion of fiscal results, noted that Google had a little slipped back with respect to tablet development when comparing it to Apple. He appreciated the work done by Google on optimizing Android for tablet devices and future smartphones, but also mentioned that the search giant was somehow behind what Apple did with the iPad. He said that the finished work, often focused on the dual-core Tegra chips of NVIDIA, was supposed to help Google and NVIDIA, as well as their partners to be able to catch up.

Huang said that it was great to compete against the iPhone and iPad, because those devices were really amazing. NVIDIA’s chief also estimated that both his team and the company’s partners were committed to compete with Apple and do a very good job.

The remarks NVIDIA’s CEO made have come after some of the tablet plans common to Google and NVIDIA had been delayed. Some companies, such as ICD and Compal, had been presenting Android tablets based on Tegra 2 hardware early in January. However, the first mainstream Android tablet did not come until September, when the Galaxy Tab of Samsung began to reach Europe. The first significant tablet based on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 hardware was the Toshiba Folio 100, which began shipping only last week.

The year-long interval allowed Apple to announce, ship and mark high sales for its iPad tablet. The device had 95.5 percent of the total tablet market as of last summer. The position Apple detains now is expected to decline as soon as the Galaxy Tab will expand and companies like Motorola, LG, HTC and others will launch new Android tablets in the CES and around the event. Their prospects are still unknown until Google will unveil Honeycomb, its first tablet-ready version of the Android operating system.

Windows Phone 7 sales not limited exclusively to retail stores, says AT&T http://www.htlounge.net/art/14067/windows-phone-7-sales-not-limited-exclusively-to-retail-stores-says-att.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14067/windows-phone-7-sales-not-limited-exclusively-to-retail-stores-says-att.html#comments Mon, 08 Nov 2010 17:29:58 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14067 AT&T has recently made clear its policies related to the launch of Windows Phone 7 after a mistaken announcement coming from a store manager who said that the devices would only be available at retail locations. Orders can also be placed online, but no device will be available to pre-order.

As it seems, the carrier is preparing a true wave of Windows Phone devices for each store and will give high priority to Microsoft’s new platform. Some leaked images suggest that the handsets will be presented together with Windows computers and the Xbox 360 gaming console.

Customers who will visit AT&T stores will be able to choose between three possible devices: the HTC Surround, Samsung Focus and LG Quantum. The Focus is believed to be priced at $200 and similar prices are expected for the Quantum and Surround.

Chimei to help Apple with display production for iPad http://www.htlounge.net/art/14060/chimei-to-help-apple-with-display-production-for-ipad.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14060/chimei-to-help-apple-with-display-production-for-ipad.html#comments Mon, 08 Nov 2010 17:21:17 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14060 The Taiwanese company Chimei Innolux may help Apple by increasing the production of displays for the iPad, according to CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets. About ten percent of the displays would be made by Chimei in 2011, but a more important role is expected over the course of the year, with 15 percent in the spring, 20 percent in the summer of the same year and 30 percent in the fall. Analysts predict that about six percent of the revenue Chimei would get in 2011 would come from the production of iPad displays and it would increase to ten percent in 2012.

The Taiwanese firm produces its own TV sets and other types of displays but is well known for being a contractor for other firms’ displays.

CLSA did not mention any change to the iPad, but it is expected that the production will be for a feature-updated model rather than a new one after Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs criticizing small tablets, with displays smaller than 9.7-inch screens. Recent rumors point to some changes for a new version of the iPad, such as a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor as well as front and back cameras.

The sales of the iPad have been seriously limited by the production of displays and this made Apple to look for help beyond the main supplier, LG Display. It is believed to have contacted Samsung for some help when it became difficult to keep up with sales.
