Monroe has declined to give any details regarding the discussions, but said that San Francisco policemen did not act properly as they did not identify two security workers at Apple, whom they followed on the search. According to the lawyer, Calderon has not done anything wrong. The police told him they would come with a warrant if h did not agree to let them check his house. There was no prototype found at the time of the search.

As Monroe mentions, the police have required to speak with Calderon as part of the investigation. A written statement has been given, but the police of San Francisco have yet to respond. Monroe offered his and his client’s help to the police to se if any of their rules was broken. The real problem Monroe revealed is that police did not disclose to his client that employees of Apple would search his home. The lawyer said that such things may happen quite often. SFPD Chief Greg Suhr is believed to have indicated searches like this one are made by the police for private investigators.

As Monroe has threatened to sue the company and even the SFPD over misrepresentation of the search, Apple may be available for talks. Calderon has thought every person who visited his house was a policeman, and he would not have agreed to have his house searched had he known the search was initiated by Apple.

T-Mobile blames iPhone’s 3G incompatibility with its networks http://www.htlounge.net/art/15799/t-mobile-blames-iphone%e2%80%99s-3g-incompatibility-with-its-networks.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15799/t-mobile-blames-iphone%e2%80%99s-3g-incompatibility-with-its-networks.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 23:04:34 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15799 T-Mobile recently complained about the lack of an iPhone on its network. News about a regional carrier, C Spire, that was receiving the new iPhone 4S, led to questions as why T-Mobile had not picked up the new phone. The carrier reiterated its position that an iPhone would be well received in its line-up, but also referred to the iPhone as being incompatible with its 3G and 4G networks.

Andrew Sherrard, Senior Vice president of Marketing at T-Mobile, made some observations. He said that the iPhone is a good handset and the carrier has expressed its interest to Apple in order to offer the phone to its customers. The ultimate decision is, however, Apple’s. There is still an issue that Apple did not develop a model of the iPhone capable of working on T-Mobile’s fast 3G and 4G networks. The carrier believes that a version of the iPhone able to work on its networks would be an attractive option for its customers. After all, the iPhone is not the only smartphone offer capable to satisfy the users’ requirements, added Sherrard.

The iPhone is a world phone which supports a wide range of CDMA and GSM networks, but the radio of the iPhone 4S is not compatible with the 1,700MHz frequency of T-Mobile.

The expansion of the iPhone range is a permanent point of interest of Apple. The 3GS was maintained in its current line-up in the category of entry-level devices alongside the newer 4 and 4S models. It has been adding additional carriers each year, although T-Mobile is believed to be the most known US carrier not having the device yet.

Apple has not commented on the topic, but it is likely that moving to a true 4G LTE chipset would certainly show T-Mobile joining the other carriers that sell the iPhone together with Android devices.

Sprint’s device strategy centered on the iPhone http://www.htlounge.net/art/15780/sprint%e2%80%99s-device-strategy-centered-on-the-iphone.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15780/sprint%e2%80%99s-device-strategy-centered-on-the-iphone.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 21:36:37 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15780 During the recent Strategy Update event of Sprint in New York, the company outlined that the iPhone was the core of its future device strategy. It reiterated that the absence of an iPhone was the main reason for customers leaving the carrier. Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO, claimed that the iPhone would bring customers back. He revealed that his company had even timed the event around the launch of the iPhone 4S in order to discuss its importance.

According to Hesse, the answer to taking both the brand and churn to the next level is the iPhone. He said that Apple was the best brand present in the tech space.

Sprint’s CEO was aware about Apple calling for steeper subsidies, but anticipated that it would certainly be I the future one of the most profitable devices. Bob Azzi, Senior Network VP said that Sprint had built into all the processes the likely load from an iPhone and has been doing this for months.

In order to provide better voice connections, mainly indoors, and to improve data, CDMA voice was moved to 800MHz. Networks have been updated in groups in order to increase the perceived effect. Several weak points in urbanized areas like New York City would be eliminated.

The statements of Sprint’s officials do not clearly confirm rumors, but they support a major leak indicating that the company may have put its future together with Apple. It will still lean on Android devices but through improving the network reputation and offering unlimited data is counting on being a better choice or even the best one. Planning the move to LTE on 4G will future-proof it against an assumed transition to LTE on the iPhone in 2012.

Testing of iOS 5 going back to third–generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS http://www.htlounge.net/art/15529/testing-of-ios-5-going-back-to-third%e2%80%93generation-ipod-touch-and-iphone-3gs.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15529/testing-of-ios-5-going-back-to-third%e2%80%93generation-ipod-touch-and-iphone-3gs.html#comments Thu, 12 May 2011 21:00:21 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15529 Some sayings of the iOS 5.0 device testing suggest that Apple is about two years back for device support. It is already known to go back to last year’s hardware, but 9to5 has seen some instances of the iPhone 3GS as well as the iPod touch of the third generation. Support would not be guaranteed for older devices but it is believed that iOS 5 was designed in the context of 2009-era hardware.

iOS 4 was Apple’s first mobile platform which started cutting off device support excluding the original iPhone as well as the iPod touch. Apple also dropped the second-generation iPod touch and the iPhone 3G from iOS 4.3, possibly after new features becoming too demanding. An eventual cutoff at the 3GS model of the iPhone would be expected for iOS 5 and may see the already older phone missing out on features dependent on speed.

The beta format of the iOS 5 is expected to show at WWDC in June. The next-generation iPhone is supposed to ship with iOS 5 in September.

Phil Schiller says black iPhone is not thinner than white http://www.htlounge.net/art/15527/phil-schiller-says-black-iphone-is-not-thinner-than-white.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15527/phil-schiller-says-black-iphone-is-not-thinner-than-white.html#comments Thu, 12 May 2011 20:58:26 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15527 Phil Schiller, Apple’s vice president of worldwide product marketing, recently challenged observations that the white iPhone would be thicker than its black sibling. In a direct message addressed to Ernesto Barron, he contradicted those persons who had said the thickness of the white model would be other than that of the black device and encouraged people to ignore everything that is written on that topic.

Nobody knows why Schiller has sent a direct message. He has been active on Twitter lately but is usually making comments in public.

Many owners of the white model of iPhone have compared it side-by-side to the black version and observed a clearly thicker design, problematic for cases having very little tolerance, like is the case of some silicone cases. An official answer to clarify the reason of this difference is lacking so far. There are speculations saying that a thicker layer would be required for protection against UV action or simply for making the device look as good as it was shown in photos.

Sharp to make LTPS LCDs for next 2012 iPhone models http://www.htlounge.net/art/15495/sharp-to-make-ltps-lcds-for-next-2012-iphone-models.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15495/sharp-to-make-ltps-lcds-for-next-2012-iphone-models.html#comments Tue, 03 May 2011 04:06:32 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15495 Rumors regarding the involvement of Sharp in a long term business for iPhone displays were renewed a few days ago when some assertions appeared in the Japanese Nikkan paper, saying the company would make displays for 2012 models of the iPhone. The design is supposed to use LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) LCDs with polycrystalline silicon used to slim down thanks to having the display driver hardware mounted directly on the glass. Power consumption would be improved thanks to lower required temperature, said AppleInsider, while a richer image would be produced as the aperture ratio would be higher.

The most unused first plant of Sharp, in Kameyama, would be involved, as Sharp recently confirmed it was converting the second Kameyama production capacity to make displays for phones and tablets, but had been quite silent regarding future plans for its first plant.

Sharp did not confirm any details, but the news would be incompatible with certain reports saying Toshiba was beating Sharp to a contract with Apple. However, Apple did several times repeat it had more than one component partner in Japan, as it constantly avoids leaning too much on a single supplier. Apple did not make public anything related to the topic but has mentioned a long-term investment in technology, which did sound for many as meaning mobile displays.

For Apple to keep a clear technical lead, screens could prove to be vital. It was one of the first manufacturers to use “pixel-free” 640×960 screens in its iPhone 4 and has faced only little competition, with Sharp and Apple’s frequent shadower Meizu which used similar resolutions as yet. LTPS is expected to contribute to longer battery life, thinner phones and significantly more attractive screens as well.

According to survey, 37 percent of teens in US expect to get iPhones http://www.htlounge.net/art/15399/according-to-survey-37-percent-of-teens-in-us-expect-to-get-iphones.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15399/according-to-survey-37-percent-of-teens-in-us-expect-to-get-iphones.html#comments Wed, 13 Apr 2011 20:50:13 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15399 Around 37 percent of teenagers in the United States are expecting to get an iPhone during the next six months, as a Piper Jaffray survey shows. Out of the 4,500 recently polled teens, 17 percent declared they already owned an iPhone. Although the number of teens expecting to get an iPhone is not a relevant predictor, as the device is far too expensive for most of them to buy, the survey is relevant with respect to a trend among young generations.

About 22 percent of the polled teenagers, which means one in five, claim to already own a tablet or at least one tablet in their household. Another twenty percent hope to get a tablet in less than six months. All these figures sound well for Apple, as its iPad accounted for 83 percent of all tablets in 2010. It is also supposed to preserve its domination.

Out of the eighty percent interviewed who said they owned a dedicated MP3 player, about 86 percent said this was an iPod, which means more than the 78 percent having said the same in the fall. However, the number of people having an MP3 player has decreased by ten percent and this reflects a reality, as 53 percent of teens declared they were using their phones to listen to music. According to the survey, filesharing services still are a primary source for finding tracks, as 65 percent of the polled persons belonged to this group. Apple is accounting for 95 percent of all paid downloads.

Survey shows one third of Chinese 3G buyers prefer iPhone http://www.htlounge.net/art/15349/survey-shows-one-third-of-chinese-3g-buyers-prefer-iphone.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15349/survey-shows-one-third-of-chinese-3g-buyers-prefer-iphone.html#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 15:21:46 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15349 According to a recent AlphaWise/Morgan Stanley survey, Apple is managing quite well in the phone industry in China. Among the 2,029 Chinese users of cellphones interviewed in February and March, 88 percent claimed they would buy a smartphone as their next phone. Thirty percent of the group intending to acquire a 3G phone declared they would buy an iPhone.

The major obstacle to Apple would be price. Without considering cost as a problem, the total amount of customers intending to buy an iPhone would jump to 53 percent. The recent survey is however representative of a small part of Chinese society, because most people are relatively poor and affluence is concentrated mainly around a few cities big cities like Beijing and Shanghai.

Main competition for Apple is represented by Nokia. Although negligible on the smartphone market of the United States, a quarter of the 3G buyers in the Chinese survey claimed they would buy a Nokia phone next. Primary advantages brought by Nokia would be, according to the survey, reception, reputation, service, price and battery life. On the other hand, the iPhone is preferred for the interface, Internet and media features, as well as for social status.

IDC claims that Android will lead until 2015 and Windows Phone will get past iPhone http://www.htlounge.net/art/15242/idc-claims-that-android-will-lead-until-2015-and-windows-phone-will-get-past-iphone.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15242/idc-claims-that-android-will-lead-until-2015-and-windows-phone-will-get-past-iphone.html#comments Fri, 01 Apr 2011 10:41:38 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15242 IDC has recently predicted that Android may keep its lead until 2015, but also that the Windows Phone will overtake Apple’s iPhone for second place. Android will most probably take 39.5 percent this year, but increase only slightly to hit 45.4 percent in 2015. Nokia’s Windows Phone switch may end up reversing its condition and Symbian’s forecasted 20.9 percent share in 2011 over to Windows Phone four years later.

Apple’s iPhone could pass the BlackBerry in 2011, at 15.7 percent opposed to 14.9 percent, but the company could see its market share drop along with RIM’s to 15.3 percent and respectively 13.7 percent each. This swap would all but cancel Symbian’s share and leave it with only 0.2 percent by the end.

However, IDC hasn’t benefited from an ideal track record of predicting market share and particularly in January 2010 assumed that Symbian would last at least until 2013, despite the fact that the company has been demonstrated losing share quickly and Nokia confirmed it later. This prediction also presumed that Nokia would keep its market share in the Windows Phone transition, in spite of the actual success for carriers being in doubt.

T-Mobile would not offer the iPhone after the deal with AT&T http://www.htlounge.net/art/15058/t-mobile-would-not-offer-the-iphone-after-the-deal-with-att.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15058/t-mobile-would-not-offer-the-iphone-after-the-deal-with-att.html#comments Thu, 24 Mar 2011 19:27:08 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15058 T-Mobile quickly denied any immediate plans to offer the iPhone after the takeover by AT&T. the company stressed that it was not expecting the deal to take effect for a year at least and consequently no Apple deal was imminent. The announcement left room for a deal related to the iPhone, but for the moment directed its customers towards devices being now on sale.

The company said that T-Mobile USA would remain an independent entity and that the acquisition would be finished in about twelve months. The iPhone would not be offered in the near future, but cutting edge phones like the Galaxy S 4G of Samsung and the new Sidekick 4G represent a good choice.

An immediate plan was not expected due to the nature of the current GSM iPhone. The iPhone 4 has no 1,700MHz 3G support and therefore is limited to 2G (EDGE) for data, which represents a disadvantage compared to the AT&T device. There were rumors of the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile, but if they are true the carrier would receive a one-off device which would be unnecessary after the merge.

The company has lately become elusive on this topic and refused to either deny or confirm its intentions related to the iPhone. However, it has made use of the same language Verizon used when a deal was imminent and it did not want to make public its plans and risk seeing its Android sales decrease.

On the other hand, AT&T said that its announced buyout of T-Mobile would be beneficial to customers belonging to both networks, as it would include an improved coverage and would allow T-Mobile users to access LTE-based 4G.
