The new Bold 9900 series will be the first with both a fixed keyboard of the QWERTY type and focused on a very sharp 2.8-inch touchscreen with a 640×480 resolution. RIM also aims to a true iPhone-like responsiveness thanks to its interface at sixty frames per second, which will not lag anymore like it happened with the Torch and the Storm.

The phone is more powerful inside, as it has a 1.2GHz processor, possibly a Snapdragon, and 768MB of RAM. The device supports HSPA+ 3G on both single- and dual-mode versions of GSM. Another key feature is the operating system, the BlackBerry 7, which is expected to speed up the slower browsing through a new JavaScript compiler and support for HTML5. OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics completes the features which give BlackBerry handsets a real 3D gaming experience in premiere.

Voice-activated Universal Search is also brought by BlackBerry 7, like Android does. Now official, BlackBerry Balance helps to keep secure the e-mail as well as other corporate information, separated from personal data existent on the same phone. This technique keeps secret information off-limits to personal applications and at the same time allows the company to wipe off its data remotely on a leaving employee’s device without affecting personal data.

The new phone catches up and even moves ahead in some directions for RIM with the added NFC, which allows making short-range payments or reading tags in wireless mode. Also added is 720-pixel video recording to the phone’s five-megapixel camera. The phone is the thinnest ever with its only 10.5 millimeters, but is still a millimeter thicker than its rival, the iPhone 4. It has 8GB of internal storage and a microSDHC card slot, as well as a removable battery.

The new Bold 9900 phones are expected to ship in GSM (9900) as well as in dual-mode CDMA/GSM (9930) models in the summer. According to early leaks, the launch would be scheduled for July.

The second one is the more compact and more affordable HXR-NX70J. Both camcorders belong to the company’s NXCAM series; however, just the former’s lenses are swappable.

Sony’s NEX-FS100JK makes use of a Super 35mm format and Sony’s Exmor Super35 CMOS sensor. The camcorder is able to record 1080p video at 60 frames per second in AVCHD format at 28Mbps. Moreover, standard def content can be saved in MPEG-2 format. In what storage media is concerned, SDXC, SDHC and SD cards can be added, as well as Memory Stick Pro Duo Class 4 cards. The camcorder benefits from an HS-SDI output for professionals, alongside the more ordinary, consumer-grade XLR and HDMI outputs. The device will be available in Japan in late spring, being sold under a 690,000 Yen (the equivalent of almost $8,500) price tag.

Sony’s more compact HXR-NX70J benefits from a 6.65Mpix Exmor R CMOS sensor, as well as from a fixed G-series Sony lens with a 10x optical zoom. This is able to record AVCHD 1080/60p video at 28Mbps alongside MPEG-2 PS SD videos. The camcorder offers 96MB of integrated memory, as well as a Memory Stick slot and SDXC Class 4-compatible memory slot. However, XLR inputs are available. The camera should be available in Japan only so far sometime this summer, at a price of 330,750 Yen (almost $4,100).

New Cyber-shot cameras from Sony with 3D and HD video http://www.htlounge.net/art/14447/new-cyber-shot-cameras-from-sony-with-3d-and-hd-video.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14447/new-cyber-shot-cameras-from-sony-with-3d-and-hd-video.html#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 21:07:42 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14447 Sony has presented a new collection of Cyber-shot cameras at CES. Five of them are 16.2-megapixel models able to capture 3D stills, which include panoramas, using a single imager and lens. The five cameras are the HX7V, TX10, TX100V, WX9 and WX10. Among them, the TX100V is said to be a first compact camera which can reproduce 1080p60 video. The other four cameras are 1080i60-capable.

The TX100V has, aside from supporting 1080-pixel video, a 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen. It also sports compass sensors necessary for photo geotagging and supports GPS. The device is supposed to ship in March and would cost $380.

The TX10 camera has a 3-inch LCD which is claimed to be resistant to dust, water, shocks and freezing. The next camera, the HX7V, features 10× optical zoom and 10 frames per second capture speed. It also provides geotagging and support for video and still recording at the same time. The WX10 has similar features but lacks geotagging and also scales down to a lens with optical stabilization, but only 7× optical zoom and f/2.4. The WX9 is equipped with a basic 5× lens. All four models should ship in March and would have prices going from $220 for the WX9 up to $330 in the case of the TX10.

Other Cyber-shots include H-, T- and W-series models. The four W models are the W510, W530, W560 and W570, with 12.1 up to 16.1-megapixel ratings, as well as 4× optical zoom and 5× for the W570. Only the two most expensive devices have optical image stabilization as well as 720-pixel video recording. All four models are expected to ship in February, with prices starting from $110 up to $180.

The T110 camera also has 720-pixel video and sports optical stabilization. It equally has a 3-inch LCD touchscreen and 4× optical zoom. Shipping is scheduled for March at a price of $230. Last but not least, the H70 is expected to come at the same moment and have the same price as the T110. However, it would have only 10× optical zoom as well as 720-pixel video.

Another Zune HD to come in 2011? http://www.htlounge.net/art/13353/another-zune-hd-to-come-in-2011.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13353/another-zune-hd-to-come-in-2011.html#comments Mon, 06 Sep 2010 19:26:21 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13353 It seems that Microsoft might give the Zune HD one last chance, according to some sources. The device would use, as predicted, at least some features of Windows Phone 7, but would not be shipped until 2011. Its development being in an early stage, most hardware remains unknown, but it is likely to keep relying on an ARM processor, probably like the NVIDIA Tegra used at present.

Originally launched in November 2006 as a Microsoft’s attempt to prevent the iPod touch from maintaining an absolute supremacy on the MP3 player market, the Zune HD almost never exceeded two percent share of the United States market, being placed behind SanDisk. The Zune HD has been the first mainstream handheld to provide Wi-Fi music sharing, synchronizing and on-device purchasing. However, Microsoft has skipped on adding hardware as well as software features. The 2008 design was almost unchanged from the previous year. Support for Audible or Genius Mix-style Smart DJ came significantly later than when they were introduced at Apple.

Most efforts on the Zune platform have been redirected to other projects, including Windows Phone 7 or the Xbox 360 and even to the ephemeral Kin.

HDBaseT to be the new HD video standard instead of HDMI? http://www.htlounge.net/art/12886/hdbaset-to-be-the-new-hd-video-standard-instead-of-hdmi.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12886/hdbaset-to-be-the-new-hd-video-standard-instead-of-hdmi.html#comments Thu, 08 Jul 2010 17:43:49 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12886 The HDBaseT Alliance which is six-month old has finalized the technical specifications of its standard for A/V cable called HDBaseT. It is meant to replace the existing HDMI standard and would convey signals over standard network cables Cat 5e/6, long up to 328 feet. This format also allows mixing of data and video, being able to take 3D and high definition video signals as an addition to a normal 100Mbps network.

Networking capabilities added will allow HTPCs and DVRs to output video signal to any TV set in the house. Several devices can be connected in a daisy-chain or star configuration. Power can also be transmitted through the network so that it can be provided to TVs that require only one input cable.

The first hardware products supporting the standard are scheduled to reach stores sometime later this year, although the alliance expects important adoption rates only in 2011. HDBaseT is constituted of LG, Samsung, Valens Semiconductor and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

A new filing containing an image of the device with AT&T branding as well as references to AT&T services like Maps, Family Map or Navigator have given enough clues to point on AT&T as the future carrier for the Vivaz. The main feature distinguishing the new device is the 8.1-megapixel camera supporting 720-pixel video recording capabilities.

The operating system for the Vivaz will be the 5th Edition of Symbian S60. The handset also sports Wi-Fi, GPS and DLNA media sharing, as well as a 640×360 touchscreen. The device is relatively fast thanks to its 720MHz CPU and PowerVR SGX graphics. A memory card of 8GB is also provided. Integration of social networks like Twitter and Facebook is also provided.

The handset has not been announced yet by AT&T, but is expected to be delivered soon by the carrier. The price might be between $100 and $150 if paired with new contracts.

Microsoft’s Bing to get new entertainment features http://www.htlounge.net/art/12702/microsoft%e2%80%99s-bing-to-get-new-entertainment-features.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12702/microsoft%e2%80%99s-bing-to-get-new-entertainment-features.html#comments Sun, 27 Jun 2010 14:37:29 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12702 Microsoft has recently announced that the Bing portal has gone through an upgrade process, having some new features, which are focused on entertainment content. In what music-related searches are concerned, users can have access to lyrics, band photos, videos and even tour dates for their favorite artists. Links from Zune, iTunes and Amazon.com MP3 will also be provided by search results.

A new gaming searches layout is also offered by Bing; detailed information seems to be available for more than 35,000 titles. Structured content includes cheats, reviews and also walkthroughs for multiple games. Nearly 100 free casual games can be played, without leaving the Bing portal (for example, Bejeweled).

Full-length episodes are included in the TV content, alongside HD video and guide information, which helps catch shows on actual TVs. Bing provides movie information, including theatres and showtimes, parking places, traffic updates and even reviews.

Nearly all of the improved content is already available at Bing.com; TV listings make an exception, but will be added in the next few weeks.

Seagate unveils Momentus XT hybrid HD and SSD http://www.htlounge.net/art/12328/seagate-unveils-momentus-xt-hybrid-hd-and-ssd.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12328/seagate-unveils-momentus-xt-hybrid-hd-and-ssd.html#comments Sat, 29 May 2010 14:47:27 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12328 Seagate has revealed the Momentus XT. The drive is meant to be the best for notebooks. It includes a traditional 2.5-inch at 7,200RPM hard drive with a 4GB solid-state drive, SLC-based, and 32MB of memory, DDR3 type, as a cache. Special firmware present on the drive uses the solid-state drive to optimize performance. It would boost as fast as a genuine SSD. It also would load about 80 percent faster than would a regular 7,200RPM drive.

The SATA II drive is OS-independent and is addressed to performance users that include high-end notebooks and compact desktops as well as other devices that are able to use the extra bandwidth, such as, for example, USB 3.0 or eSATA. There are three versions of the Momentus XT available, the 250GB, 320GB and 500GB models. Starting prices are much lower than for traditional SSDs, about $113.

Confirmation of the iPhone HD? http://www.htlounge.net/art/12081/confirmation-of-the-iphone-hd.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12081/confirmation-of-the-iphone-hd.html#comments Fri, 30 Apr 2010 21:47:26 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12081 The leaked new iPhone model seems to be closer and closer to its unveiling. A new proof of its existence was brought, this time by persons really touching it. The smartphone in question is very similar to an iPhone and includes labelled parts on its inside, not to speak about being recognized as a real iPhone by iTunes. According to Gizmodo, its identity was deliberately hidden by Apple, perhaps by tracking the IMEI number or UDID.

The whole look of the phone leads to the conclusion of a perfect imitation of the iPhone 3GS.

The device appears to have at least some of the features already rumoured, like a higher-resolution screen, a front camera and flash added to the back camera. A SIM card slot is now located on its side instead of its top and a secondary microphone to counter outside sound with noise removal is also present. The battery is supposed to be 16 percent larger than the previous one. The smartphone seems to be closer to its final design, which is slightly heavier, with aluminium trim and metal buttons, as well as a likely ceramic back. People having seen it report it feels very comfortable in the hand and certainly reminds the simplicity of the design already shown by the iMac and iPad.

His seems to be a major leak of an Apple product in recent history and practically removes most of the enigmas around the next iPhone version, which will probably unveiled in June. There are still mysteries, but everything appears clearer now. For example, support for high definition video recording and playback is still uncertain, as well as the amount of storage included. Some people predict the phone will have a 5-megapixel camera with 720-pixel video capture, a 960×640 resolution display and memory space between 64GB and 80GB, but only the near future will tell whether all these are real or not.
