However, the Korean company would even sell it for less than $1 billion if the intended target could not be reached. As Wall Street Journal said, Seagate would be the only candidate for this deal but it is not very clear how the US company would land the deal.

As Samsung had said earlier in April, its profits would rapidly shrink in the company’s winter quarter results. The hard drive segment is considered to be one of those responsible for poorer results and seems to have been a permanent source of losses for the company. The cited source stated that continuing to produce conventional rotating drives would not be a successful strategy and could be stopped without much trouble.

Apple has been partly blamed for the losses, as it is considered the world’s largest consumer of flash memories and is made responsible for determining a shift away from the use of mini hard drives to flash memories in media players. The phenomenon has also had an impact on computers. The iPad is entirely based on flash memory and has been thought responsible for causing a complete reorganization at Acer when its share started collapsing quickly because of promoting conventional notebooks, which have for a time maintained interest in using hard drives. The success Apple experienced in driving all-flash storage in the MacBook Air is also well known.

The storage business has seen consolidation as an increasingly common trend, as many companies have been eager to sell their businesses. For instance, Hitachi’s team has been bought by Western Digital in March. Other companies, such as Fujitsu, faced tough competition from the dominant players in the industry, Seagate and Western Digital.

No comment has been made by either Samsung or Seagate on the above mentioned topic.

The world’s smallest-ever USB 3.0 drives from LaCie http://www.htlounge.net/art/13434/the-world%e2%80%99s-smallest-ever-usb-3-0-drives-from-lacie.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13434/the-world%e2%80%99s-smallest-ever-usb-3-0-drives-from-lacie.html#comments Mon, 13 Sep 2010 21:09:09 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13434 LaCie has recently unveiled the new line of small form factor USB 3.0 hard drive, claimed to be the smallest ever in the world. The company’s portable Rikiki and desktop-sized Minimus drives offer a high-speed 5Gbs/s performance over USB 3.0, in a brushed aluminum casing, which takes up less space. Both of them benefit from 10GB of online storage space through Wuala.

LaCie’s new drives offer support for Mac and Windows; with most USB 3.0 hardware will only work optimally with a full native link. Both drives are, however, backwards-compatible with USB 2.0’s 480Mbps peak speeds. The Rikiki hard drive is priced at $100 for 500GB of capacity, while the Minimus costs about $129, but with a doubled capacity – 1TB.

Rikiki – The smallest hard drive from LaCie http://www.htlounge.net/art/10242/rikiki-%e2%80%93-the-smallest-hard-drive-from-lacie.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/10242/rikiki-%e2%80%93-the-smallest-hard-drive-from-lacie.html#comments Sun, 20 Dec 2009 11:07:26 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=10242 LaCie’s latest portable HDD, the 2.5-inch Rikiki, has been recently released, in a quiet move. Rikiki is believed to be one of the smallest drives of this type available on the market; consequently, its name means “tiny” in French. The hard drive has an aluminum case and it only has one USB 2.0 port, used for both power connection and file transfer.

Rikiki is compatible with Mac OS X, as well as with Windows PCs. Despite this, only Windows users can benefit from integrated USB Boost software, which can speed up the transfer by up to 33%. Another included software, LaCie Backup Assistant, can be used by both Windows and Mac users and helps in file safeguarding.

The new hard drive from LaCie is available in various models – 250GB, 500GB and 640GB – each with a price of $75, $110 and $150, respectively.

Western Digital Advanced Format provides 11 percent extra storage http://www.htlounge.net/art/10105/western-digital-advanced-format-provides-11-percent-extra-storage.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/10105/western-digital-advanced-format-provides-11-percent-extra-storage.html#comments Tue, 15 Dec 2009 19:16:53 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=10105 Western Digital claims it has developed a new technique that increases the usable space of a hard drive. The technique is known as Advanced Format and reduces the amount of overhead for data sectors by pooling together information. The Advanced Format creates much larger sectors, 4KB-sized, that use one set of each header, instead of a single Sync/DAM header and error correction (ECC) block for each sector. The format needs a larger ECC block but overall provides much more data in a drive. Western Digital believes that a fully formatted drive should have, on average, between 7 percent and 11 percent extra usable storage space than traditionally-formatted drives.

The new formatting technique should launch with the low-power Caviar Green line’s updated version and will expand to its line-up in the next weeks. Operating systems like Linux, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Mac OS X do not need any special procedures to recognize the new formatted drives, while Windows XP , which has limited file format support needs a special software and perhaps jumper changes in some cases to re-align sectors and be able to use the extra space.

Seagate’s 7mm hard drive limited to 250GB? http://www.htlounge.net/art/10055/seagate%e2%80%99s-7mm-hard-drive-limited-to-250gb.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/10055/seagate%e2%80%99s-7mm-hard-drive-limited-to-250gb.html#comments Mon, 14 Dec 2009 10:18:28 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=10055 Leaked details, if proven accurate, seem to indicate that the Seagate’s promised 7mm hard drive could have a relatively limited capacity. The line would be called the Momentus Thin and would have capacities up to 250GB, offering a 160GB model for those who are concerned about the price. The drives would in any case spin at 5,400rpm, which is typical for notebook 9.5mm or 12mm tall drives.

Both of the drives, that are SATA II-capable, will be unveiled at CES in early January next year. There is still no information available on whether or not the drives will ship immediately or maybe later. Seagate has officially claimed that the 7mm hard drives are meant for use in extra-thin notebooks that previously had no alternative but to use either lower capacity drives or solid-state drives which are much more expensive.
