Skype calling support added to Blu-ray players at Panasonic http://www.htlounge.net/art/14458/skype-calling-support-added-to-blu-ray-players-at-panasonic.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14458/skype-calling-support-added-to-blu-ray-players-at-panasonic.html#comments Sat, 15 Jan 2011 21:12:05 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14458 Panasonic and Skype at CES announced they had teamed up to provide the former’s Blu-ray players with video calling capabilities from Skype. The functionality, no longer relegated only to the connected TV set of the company, is now available on 2011 VIERA CAST-capable Blu-ray disc players. The consumers do not need a Panasonic HDTV for this anymore, therefore the new functionality is an advantage for them. Skype-to-Skype video and voice calls continue to be free, landline calling and smartphone charges being made at Skype’s rates.

Conferencing with up to 24 other partners is still supported. When users are not at home to be able to receive Skype calls, it is possible for the caller to leave a message. When a message is waiting, a blinking light on the Blu-ray player indicates this. Blu-ray players such as the DMP-BDT110, DMP-BDT210 or DMP-BDT310 require connected, cameras, compatible with Skype.

The Blu-ray players support Skype video calls up to 720-pixel resolution at 22 frames per second. This is more than users of PCs get, at 640×480 VGA.

New 1TB optical disc made by TDK http://www.htlounge.net/art/13824/new-1tb-optical-disc-made-by-tdk.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/13824/new-1tb-optical-disc-made-by-tdk.html#comments Sat, 16 Oct 2010 20:50:22 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=13824 TDK at the recent CEATEC exposition in Japan showed off its prototype of an optical disc having a 1TB capacity. The disc was made by creating sixteen recording layers, each of them with a capacity of 32GB. Compared to the new device, a usual Blu-ray disc has only 25GB capacity or 50 GB in case of a dual layer, and cannot have more than four layers.

The light transmittance of the disc is very high, with 95.1 percent for each layer and reaches 72.6 percent for the entire disc. According to a TDK representative, material used to make the new disc is currently utilized in Blu-ray media, so that durability is not unproven.

The new disc has read speeds identical to those of Blu-ray devices. Symbol error rates when reading out data are situated between 1 × 10-5 and 1 × 10-4, low enough for commercial purposes. However, the thickness of the disc is a topic that still needs discussions. While the TDK disc is 260μm thick, a Blu-ray recording layer has to be less than 100μm. The TDK disc causes aberration of optical lenses.

TDK said support of other disc producers was still needed before the new medium could be commercialized. Expected applications include not only backup, but also broadcasting as well as recording in the home.

Steve Jobs – Most likely no hope for Blu-ray on Apple’s Macs http://www.htlounge.net/art/12845/steve-jobs-%e2%80%93-most-likely-no-hope-for-blu-ray-on-apple%e2%80%99s-macs.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12845/steve-jobs-%e2%80%93-most-likely-no-hope-for-blu-ray-on-apple%e2%80%99s-macs.html#comments Tue, 06 Jul 2010 10:52:20 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12845 Apparently, Steve Jobs left little to no hope that Blu-ray will be available on the Mac in the near future. According to an e-mail response posted by MacRumors, Jobs compared the Blu-ray to the high end audio formats, which allowed the CD; he has also declared that it will soon be beaten by Internet downloadable formats.

The correspondence continued and Jobs argued that free, instant satisfaction and convenience are some of the factors that have made MP3s take off. He also said that the downloadable movie business is swiftly moving to free services – for example, Hulu – or even rentals; therefore, Jobs claims that storing purchased movies is not an option anymore. The CEO declared that it is very possible to soon see a fast, large move to streamed free and rental content, available at a satisfactory quality (at least 720p) to win almost everybody.

Some rumors claimed that Blu-ray could have been headed to Apple’s Macs; despite this, none of these reports turned out to be true. Because of copyright protection, as well as licensing issues, Steve Jobs has described this disc format as some kind of a bag of hurt.

128GB BDXL format approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association http://www.htlounge.net/art/12736/128gb-bdxl-format-approved-by-the-blu-ray-disc-association.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/12736/128gb-bdxl-format-approved-by-the-blu-ray-disc-association.html#comments Mon, 28 Jun 2010 15:39:56 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=12736 On June 25, 2010, the Blu-ray Disc Association finalized the proposed BDXL format for Blu-ray discs. This will offer up to 128GB of storage space on both rewritable and write-once discs. BDXL will mainly target video producers and people who need to write a large amount of data to a removable backup; this will be possible with triple-layer 100GB rewritable discs (RE) and write-once discs (R), but also with quadruple-layer 128GB R discs.

In order to read BDXL discs, new disc readers have to be especially designed to read this type of discs, even if these will also be compatible with the current 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray disc formats. License information, as well as applications for this new standard are already available for manufacturers. The Association hasn’t yet given any details on the estimated release date of the first BDXL hardware.

Oppo has launched the lower-cost BDP-80 Blu-ray player http://www.htlounge.net/art/11018/oppo-has-launched-the-lower-cost-bdp-80-blu-ray-player.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/11018/oppo-has-launched-the-lower-cost-bdp-80-blu-ray-player.html#comments Sun, 31 Jan 2010 19:11:42 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=11018 Oppo has recently launched the lowest-cost Blu-ray player in its high-end line of similar products. The BDP-80, similar to the BDP-83, but dropping the second video processor, moves all the work to the main decoder and sheds 24p DVD upscaling in the process. It also differs from the more expensive BDP-83 in the same series by having slightly older digital-to-analog converters and lacking IR and RS-232 serial ports.

The player sports all modern Blu-ray features and has 1GB of internal memory and an Ethernet jack to support BD-Live. Like its predecessor, it can also play Blu-ray movies at 24p without needing pull-down conversion and has an HDMI 1.3 output supporting 36-bit colour on matching receivers and TV sets. There is still an option for non-disc formats that range from simple photos and audio to video formats like AVCHD (H.24), whether stored on an attached USB drive or on disc.

Oppo is already receiving orders for the BDP-80 Blu-ray player that is priced at $289, which is much lower than the BDP-83 with its $499 price.

The company did not give details of the hardware included in the players but claimed significant expansion of the online features apart the already existing Netflix, CinemaNow, YouTube and Pandora options. According to the Korean company, the players would let users download movies and music and create their own library that is searchable by metadata, such as the album name for example. Current players have built-in Wi-Fi and support BD-live added to the Internet-only content.

LG is expected to provide further information about the new features of the Blu-ray players at its CES keynote as well as its own show.
