Files and a validation token obtained from a jailbroken iPhone 4S are used to trick the voice recognition system and make it work as it would do it on its original platform. Unlike earlier hacks, the current implementation works at full speed and connects properly to the network.

More refinement involves now making the system work smoothly. There are about twenty steps to make it working, said Troughton-Smith. He wanted to be sure that his technique does not break other components in the background and is very safe to use.

Other details would come once the whole process was cleaned up. Steve Troughton-Smith did not want to insert himself the code in the Cydia jailbreak store, as he wanted a proof of concept. Being interpreted as illegal is also a possibility he would want to avoid.

The hack shows why Apple did not implement it on the iPod touch. The microphone is not powerful enough to receive voice on a consistent level, such as on the iPhone. However, the iPhone 4 appears to process tasks at a similar speed the iPhone 4S does. This suggests that Apple perhaps did not have enough time or simply lacked resources to backport Siri. Another hypothesis would be that Apple held off in order to encourage early sales.

Samsung pushes past Apple to be first with 27.8 million smartphones sold http://www.htlounge.net/art/15839/samsung-pushes-past-apple-to-be-first-with-27-8-million-smartphones-sold.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15839/samsung-pushes-past-apple-to-be-first-with-27-8-million-smartphones-sold.html#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 09:43:59 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15839 According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung was the top smartphone maker of the summer, way ahead of its rival Apple. Although Samsung did not directly supply sale numbers, the firm found out the Korean company had shipped about 27.8 million smartphones. After claiming the top in the spring, Apple shipped 17.07 million devices in the run-up to its iPhone 4S and therefore only got the second place.

While Apple dipped to only 14.6 percent of the whole smartphone zone, Samsung touched 23.8 percent. Nokia had 16.8 million devices sold and, with its 14.4 percent, is still behind Apple

The success Samsung was credited with is a consequence of getting “memorable” brands in “elegant” hardware. Most people have connected the recent run to the Galaxy S II. It has managed to sell over ten million devices since its arrival in April. Although sales of cheaper or older models, such as the original Galaxy S versions or budget Galaxy ace phones, had a contribution to these results, their sales are considerably smaller.

Sales of smartphones are a central point for a rather downbeat quarter, with chips and displays dragging the profit down. Apple has had record sales with the occasion of the iPhone launches and it is already established that iPhone 4S sales have even offset the company’s summer drop. Therefore, Samsung may not keep its top position for a long time. Apple is adding KDDI and Sprint to its carrier choice for the first time and expects to see its new phone arriving on Verizon too.

Apple TV set hinted in 2013 to tout Siri voice control http://www.htlounge.net/art/15826/apple-tv-set-hinted-in-2013-to-tout-siri-voice-control.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15826/apple-tv-set-hinted-in-2013-to-tout-siri-voice-control.html#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 09:10:40 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15826 Apple’s TV set that Steve Jobs had hinted before his death is still far from appearing, but some elements have shown up, according to recent rumors. The NY Times found out from sources that the controlling solution Jobs had mentioned would be Siri, the voice command engine for natural language, already included in the iPhone 4S. This engine is meant to eliminate the sometimes troubling remote control and replace it with an intelligent solution able to find out what the user is wanting, for example Internet video or TV shows.

Jobs may have meant voice when mentioning his idea for the simplest interface one could imagine for a TV set. How this solution would work is not clear enough by now. For instance, it would be interesting to know how the voice could overcome the sound of the TV itself.

There is enough time for Apple to make this project work. The TV set has been a guaranteed product, thinking back at the moment when the first TV set-top box of Apple appeared in 2007. Last year, large parts of what may have been important elements of the prototype have circulated. Therefore, the company is expected to unveil its new product at the end of 2012 and may ship in 2013.

Apple will certainly try to refine the product, but may also want to wait for cheaper displays in order to make TVs meeting its cost expectations. Internet-capable TVs are considerably over $1,000 and may often be over $2,000, and therefore may discourage casual upgrades. This is the reason for which most owners keep their TVs for several years. Apple tries to determine TV owners to upgrade every two-three years, which makes almost impossible trading up at current TV prices.

The current Apple TV hub may be Apple’s prototype for what it intends to implement ultimately. During result calls, Steve Jobs and other representatives of the company have referred to the device as being a hobby but did not cease to suggest that something was hiding there. Many people have interpreted this as a sign that future devices could be improvements on Apple’s box. However, Jobs said that one of the most important obstacles to obtaining widespread adoption was represented by the need to have a separate box besides the usual TV receiver for satellite or cable.

Homeowner in discussions with Apple regarding controversial search http://www.htlounge.net/art/15818/homeowner-in-discussions-with-apple-regarding-controversial-search.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15818/homeowner-in-discussions-with-apple-regarding-controversial-search.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 23:30:51 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15818 The owner of a home searched for a missing prototype of iPhone, Sergio Calderone, and Apple are in talks, as the owner’s lawyer, David Monroe, said. Monroe has declined to give any details regarding the discussions, but said that San Francisco policemen did not act properly as they did not identify two security workers at Apple, whom they followed on the search. According to the lawyer, Calderon has not done anything wrong. The police told him they would come with a warrant if h did not agree to let them check his house. There was no prototype found at the time of the search.

As Monroe mentions, the police have required to speak with Calderon as part of the investigation. A written statement has been given, but the police of San Francisco have yet to respond. Monroe offered his and his client’s help to the police to se if any of their rules was broken. The real problem Monroe revealed is that police did not disclose to his client that employees of Apple would search his home. The lawyer said that such things may happen quite often. SFPD Chief Greg Suhr is believed to have indicated searches like this one are made by the police for private investigators.

As Monroe has threatened to sue the company and even the SFPD over misrepresentation of the search, Apple may be available for talks. Calderon has thought every person who visited his house was a policeman, and he would not have agreed to have his house searched had he known the search was initiated by Apple.

T-Mobile blames iPhone’s 3G incompatibility with its networks http://www.htlounge.net/art/15799/t-mobile-blames-iphone%e2%80%99s-3g-incompatibility-with-its-networks.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15799/t-mobile-blames-iphone%e2%80%99s-3g-incompatibility-with-its-networks.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 23:04:34 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15799 T-Mobile recently complained about the lack of an iPhone on its network. News about a regional carrier, C Spire, that was receiving the new iPhone 4S, led to questions as why T-Mobile had not picked up the new phone. The carrier reiterated its position that an iPhone would be well received in its line-up, but also referred to the iPhone as being incompatible with its 3G and 4G networks.

Andrew Sherrard, Senior Vice president of Marketing at T-Mobile, made some observations. He said that the iPhone is a good handset and the carrier has expressed its interest to Apple in order to offer the phone to its customers. The ultimate decision is, however, Apple’s. There is still an issue that Apple did not develop a model of the iPhone capable of working on T-Mobile’s fast 3G and 4G networks. The carrier believes that a version of the iPhone able to work on its networks would be an attractive option for its customers. After all, the iPhone is not the only smartphone offer capable to satisfy the users’ requirements, added Sherrard.

The iPhone is a world phone which supports a wide range of CDMA and GSM networks, but the radio of the iPhone 4S is not compatible with the 1,700MHz frequency of T-Mobile.

The expansion of the iPhone range is a permanent point of interest of Apple. The 3GS was maintained in its current line-up in the category of entry-level devices alongside the newer 4 and 4S models. It has been adding additional carriers each year, although T-Mobile is believed to be the most known US carrier not having the device yet.

Apple has not commented on the topic, but it is likely that moving to a true 4G LTE chipset would certainly show T-Mobile joining the other carriers that sell the iPhone together with Android devices.

Google Voice coming back with iOS 5 crash bug fixed http://www.htlounge.net/art/15791/google-voice-coming-back-with-ios-5-crash-bug-fixed.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15791/google-voice-coming-back-with-ios-5-crash-bug-fixed.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 22:26:04 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15791 Google recently posted the promised update of Google Voice for iOS 5. The App Store release is expected to fix an important crash bug that often prevented user from actions like logging in or launching the application. This fix is the only update known.

Google claimed to have sent an updated version of the application at about the same moment as it left the App Store, but it was pulled to avoid the creation of a negative experience for the users of iOS 5. Many of the users just have updated their devices. The absence of Google Voice was the first time when it had not been available on the iPhone since the release in November 2010.

The history of the application has been relatively stable since then, after two years from the moment the company blocked it from the store.

Rumors say the iPad 3 could have a redesigned Dock Connector http://www.htlounge.net/art/15790/rumors-say-the-ipad-3-could-have-a-redesigned-dock-connector.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15790/rumors-say-the-ipad-3-could-have-a-redesigned-dock-connector.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 22:19:58 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15790 The iPad 3 may arrive with Apple’s first redesign of the Dock Connector, according to rumors. The design was mentioned to Macotakara. It would be electrically compatible and would still use thirty pins, but it would be considerably smaller. The new version is significantly different compared to the connector of the iPad 2.

Further details show that it will still use the 9.7-inch LCD-size as does the iPad 2. The rumors did not mention a 2,048×1,536 display as certain.

A March release is expected and may have an advantage in the holiday season in China. The Chinese New Year is on the 23rd of January and overlaps with national holidays between the 22nd and the 28th of January. As a consequence, it will not have as much interruption. The full assembly of the device could be started by late January.

The rumor related to the dock has not been corroborated directly elsewhere, although production has been rumoured sooner, in December.

A smaller design for the dock is considered a big break for Apple, but the company may have set the groundwork for an expected change since last year. Owners of the AirPlay are able to stream audio and video content, including live mirroring, but do not need to have a dock. Apple’s determination to get thinner and thinner devices is encountering the Dock Connector as a possible source of limitation.

By switching away, compatibility would be dropped with about nine years of hardware at the time of shipment of the iPad 3. However, it would work thanks to electrical consistency, but would need some add-ons and would use an adapter.

Insiders say iPhone 4S was permanently intended to show the current design http://www.htlounge.net/art/15784/insiders-say-iphone-4s-was-permanently-intended-to-show-the-current-design.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15784/insiders-say-iphone-4s-was-permanently-intended-to-show-the-current-design.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 22:02:05 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15784 According to tipsters, Apple’s iPhone 4S was always destined to have the same look as its predecessor. As John Gruber said, a remade shape was never intended. The device was since the beginning meant to represent an upgrade to the iPhone 4, the same way the iPhone 3GS was the newer, updated version of the iPhone 3G.

The only concessions to an eventual physical redesign are the antennas. The dynamic switching antenna, together with the dual-mode support, have been added only after Apple faced some problems with the antenna and wanted to end any issues with reception.

A couple of sources showed that performance of the camera was permanently a focus at Apple. Executives spent a large amount of time to improve camera features, but the company is believed to have spent many efforts on cutting back camera lag where possible and has not achieved this only as a secondary goal. Phil Schiller, Senior Worldwide Product marketing vice-president, launched a joke related to the Motorola Droid Bionic, saying that its multi-second shot lag was so slow that one could get coffee waiting for its shots.

Those who expected a complete remake after a significant delay may be disappointed by the design choice. However, many have observed that the iPhone’s physical design likely would not have changed the inside of the device and would have been renewed only for its own sake.

iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II compared: Apple might win http://www.htlounge.net/art/15776/iphone-4s-and-galaxy-s-ii-compared-apple-might-win.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15776/iphone-4s-and-galaxy-s-ii-compared-apple-might-win.html#comments Sun, 30 Oct 2011 18:06:17 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15776 The launch of the iPhone 4s may be the answer Apple prepared to Samsung’s Galaxy S II. Some analysts say it is only catching up, as both devices have dual-core processors and eight-megapixel cameras and provide 1,080-pixel video. However, Apple is not only bringing itself up to par. There are aspects where the iPhone 4s is pulling ahead and others where it might be improved.

At a first sight, Samsung might look like it would have an edge. Apple has not revealed the changes it has made to the A5 processor on the iPhone and the 1.2GHz Exynos is not necessarily faster. However, both design changes and the operating system itself could make the difference. Apple is ramping up performance when necessary with the help of a dynamic clock speed. It also has an even faster graphics chip. The dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 used by the iPad is twice as fast as the Mali-400 of the Galaxy S II. Apple has to scale down the A5 processor to fit, but its performance is still better.

Photography or videography is also different. Although the cameras are almost similar, some software advantages like faster shooting, multi-face detection or grid lines in still shots are certainly in favour of Apple. When it comes to video, Apple provides stabilized image and live noise reduction. The iPhone is faster at accessing the camera, as users can get it right from the lock screen. Users of Galaxy S II, on the contrary, need to unlock the phone in order to find the camera application and this aspect would only be improved when Ice Cream Sandwich will reach the device.

More subjective is screen quality. The 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus of the Galaxy S II is certainly one of the best displays ever used on a phone, but perfection is still far away. With an acceptable sharpness, the display has a lower pixel density at 480×800. While the iPhone 4S is considered small compared to the common four-inch screens, its 640×960 resolution provides higher density than the Galaxy S II HD LTE or LG Optimus LTE available only in Korea.

Moreover, many people like smaller phones. For example, those with smaller hands or those who prefer a tighter grip would certainly choose a smaller handset. It is true that larger screens allow reading from a distance. However, not everyone needs that. Only a few phones claim to have dual-mode radio (GSM and CDMA) and 64GB of storage packed in such a small size as well.

Eventual advantages of iOS 5 versus Android 2.3 should also be considered. Siri seems to have a certain edge over Vlingo, which is Samsung’s choice. Future tests will prove this superiority or not, but Siri seems to work just like promised and therefore could be better than its competitor.

Although having the higher build quality, Apple has this time conceded in what is known as the thickness war. Depending on the version, Samsung’s Galaxy S II may be as thin as over a third of an inch. Even if only slightly thinner, it is symbolic.

Apple does not value its front camera, which is still VGA, at 0.3 megapixels, while Samsung uses a two-megapixel sensor. Although the difference does not always matter, it represents strict functionality versus ore creativity.

The Galaxy S II may be faster online depending on the carrier. T-Mobile and AT&T owners get 42Mbps or 21Mbps data. Only Sprint may be caught behind with WiMAX. However, performance is dependent on real-world speeds. It is known that AT&T users do not benefit much from peak speeds in all areas, while T-Mobile owners do not always have enough coverage. As for LTE, it is certainly faster but with only limited coverage and a battery life of four to five hours on some LTE Android phones in Verizon’s network. This is not sufficient to match up with what Apple offers as battery expectations.

The real danger for the iPhone is to be an upgrade by-the-numbers. Users knew what expectations to have. Siri itself was somehow anticipated. An owner of the iPhone 4 who is perfectly happy with its performance would have no serious reason to upgrade, as would do those who bought android phones during the past year. Nobody can say clearly whether Apple is breaking even or lagging. It is potentially faster, may have better software and is more convenient to handle. These features may count in practice more than imagined.

Apple’s iPhone 4S antenna may violate Samsung patents http://www.htlounge.net/art/15774/apple%e2%80%99s-iphone-4s-antenna-may-violate-samsung-patents.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15774/apple%e2%80%99s-iphone-4s-antenna-may-violate-samsung-patents.html#comments Sun, 30 Oct 2011 17:49:30 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15774 The new iPhone 4S antenna is expected to eliminate antenna issues suffered with the first handset version, but it may violate patents. Gert Frolund Pederson, a Danish professor, along with other colleagues at Aalborg University, spoke to ComON and said that Apple may face a legal battle from Samsung as a further counter to Apple’s original suits.

The professors claim to have sold the patents to Samsung in 2007; these have not been used in litigation with Apple yet. The patents cover technology which switches between several antennae and Apple could infringe on two of them, which relate to how and using which apparatus the handset will switch antennas.

Professor Pederson thought that Apple could have included the method that chooses the antenna based on whether the smartphone is in landscape or portrait mode. He also said that this technology is not innovative, as Apple claims, but that this has been in use for very long time in DECT cordless phones.

Samsung is currently searching for an injunction to ban Apple from selling its iPhone 4S in Europe, even if this is based on using WCDMA standards for 3G without any licensing agreement.
