The DMC-3D1 is chasing the same market as the Real 3D line of Fujifilm. The whole revolves around two cameras with 12.1-megapixel resolution, both having 25-100mm lenses and producing a stereoscopic 3D effect together.

Eight megapixels is the limit when shooting full 3D and videos are not included. Like with its rival, the lenses can be used to try 2D modes as well. While capturing wide-angle shots in one camera, the other one can be used to zoom to telephoto-like distance. It is possible for the users to continuously record video content from one camera while shooting photos from the other.

A unique quad-processor layout provides relatively fast performance by offering relatively quick shooting for a compact camera. Continuous shots with autofocus at 4FPS and 8FPS without autofocus are totally acceptable. Video recording reaches 1,080i. The standout feature for still imaging provides a multi-shot exposure mode able to minimize blur, more than what optical image stabilization could manage. The main interface is served by a 3.5-inch touchscreen.

Panasonic will ship the 3D1 this year in December and the price of $500 out-of-the box will match Fujifilm.

Nintendo 3DS receives rare editions of Mario http://www.htlounge.net/art/15800/nintendo-3ds-receives-rare-editions-of-mario.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15800/nintendo-3ds-receives-rare-editions-of-mario.html#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 23:16:51 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15800 Nintendo has kept on adopting an aggressive marketing to increase sales of the 3DS gaming console by announcing the new range of three Mario-themed 3DS editions. Only one thousand systems of each Mario theme will be sold and there is no clue on whether they will make it outside of the native country, Japan. Every member of Club Nintendo who will purchase two games during Christmas will be entered a special draw allowing them to win one of the new designs.

The announcements were part of a Nintendo pre-recorded press conference where it also stressed the addition of capabilities of 3D movie recording for the console. Up to ten minutes of 3D video recording will soon be available for Nintendo’s users, as well as stop motion, rapid-fire shots and new time-lapse intervals.

The company also mentioned the forthcoming Mario Kart version for the 3DS. This game is expected to run at an impressive frequency of sixty frames per second in 3D mode. It will also be capable of managing up to eight-player multi-player online events in the race.

Four new desktop LCDs with passive 3D support from LG http://www.htlounge.net/art/15474/four-new-desktop-lcds-with-passive-3d-support-from-lg.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15474/four-new-desktop-lcds-with-passive-3d-support-from-lg.html#comments Tue, 03 May 2011 03:39:42 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15474 On April 26, 2011, LG has released four computer LCDs with a hope of lowering the 3D’s price. Both the Cinema 3D D41P and D42P use passive 3D which is flicker-free, as well as cheaper to run without the need for any expensive active shutter glasses. All these are able to optionally convert 2D images to 3D.

All of LG’s four new displays benefit from 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratios, a 5ms pixel response time, a 1080p native resolution, but also from a 250-nit brightness in 2D or a 100-nit brightness with 3D. The entry 23-inch LG D2341P starts off with only VGA and DVI inputs. The 21.5-inch D2242P, 23-inch D2342P and 25-inch D2542P add, however, an HDMI 1.4 input to take in both 3D and 2D video from a PS3 or any other non-traditional source for a computer screen.

LG’s new displays work with Windows PCs, Macs and other ordinary platforms. Koreans get access to both LG lines starting April 26, while the worldwide release, starting with Europe, is expected from early June onwards.

Satellite P700, 3D-capable notebooks from Toshiba http://www.htlounge.net/art/15397/satellite-p700-3d-capable-notebooks-from-toshiba.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15397/satellite-p700-3d-capable-notebooks-from-toshiba.html#comments Wed, 13 Apr 2011 20:48:28 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15397 Toshiba Europe has unveiled four new notebooks with 3D active shutter glasses technology. The Satellite P750 3D/P755 3D as well as the Satellite P770 3D/P775 3D are included in the series. The former notebooks use high-definition 15.6-inch displays. The latter have bigger panels at a size of 17.3 inches. They all have 120Hz refresh rates for their displays and will ship with two pairs of 3D active shutter glasses from NVIDIA.

The new notebooks are powered by Intel Core i3, Core i4 and Core i7 processors and have up to 8GB of RAM as well as 750GB of storage on a hard drive. SSDs of smaller capacity are equally optional. As a standard, they have a dual-layer DVD writer. A Blu-ray drive and burner is optional.

NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 540M in its 1GB or 2GB versions powers the notebooks’ graphic processing. Other features are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and Harman Kardon speakers.

Prices have not been unveiled yet, but the four notebooks are expected to ship in Europe, as well as in the Middle East and Africa this spring. A release for North America is supposed to be announced soon.

Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Panasonic to settle 3D glasses standard http://www.htlounge.net/art/15244/hitachi-mitsubishi-and-panasonic-to-settle-3d-glasses-standard.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/15244/hitachi-mitsubishi-and-panasonic-to-settle-3d-glasses-standard.html#comments Fri, 01 Apr 2011 10:45:50 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=15244 Xpand 3D and Panasonic have recently put out an initiative to settle on a 3D glasses standard. M-3DI, which includes support from other companies such as Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Seiko Epson or ViewSonic, would create a reliable approach to active-shutter 3D for not only theaters and TVs, but also home projectors and computers. The new group claims that in an ideal world, this technology would allow a viewer to take the same 3D glasses they wear at home to the theater and obtain the same effect. The project involves as well part suppliers like Hisense, SIM2 and Funai. Licensing is expected to start in April. However, it wasn’t mentioned whether any of the existing companies were required to make any changes in order to adapt their glasses to M-3DI.

This effort conflicts directly with the 3D Technologies Working Group. The 3DTWG, backed by the Consumer Electronics Association, started earlier, but so far hasn’t had any public recognition of support. So far, M-3DI doesn’t include heavyweights like Samsung, Sony or LG, but its support will have grown quicker.

Moreover, concerns exist that this technology may soon become out of date as passive glasses 3D and, ultimately, glasses-free 3D end up rendering active-shutter obsolete. Current 3D TVs have frequently been criticized for the price hike from expensive active glasses, but also the weight and continuous battery recharging.

Premiere for all-3D TV network on February 13 http://www.htlounge.net/art/14673/premiere-for-all-3d-tv-network-on-february-13.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14673/premiere-for-all-3d-tv-network-on-february-13.html#comments Mon, 14 Feb 2011 19:29:09 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14673 A network exclusively dedicated to 3D TV broadcasting has launched on the 13th of February. It is called 3net and is offered by DirecTV on channel 107. The network is a joint venture between Discovery Communications, IMAX and Sony. The channel has aired two original programs in native 3D, each one-hour long, Forgotten Planet and China Revealed. The longer movie Into The Deep 3D will also debut on TV afterwards.

The programming began on Sunday at 8PM. How much the subscribers should pay for the channel is not known.

Only a small percentage of customers had agreed to 3D TVs as higher prices represent serious obstacles. At the same time, and maybe more important, the lack of content, excepting a few 3D movies, determined many potential buyers to remain circumspect. Others are waiting for the appearance of glasses-free 3D TVs with similar performances as their 2D relatives.

New Cyber-shot cameras from Sony with 3D and HD video http://www.htlounge.net/art/14447/new-cyber-shot-cameras-from-sony-with-3d-and-hd-video.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14447/new-cyber-shot-cameras-from-sony-with-3d-and-hd-video.html#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 21:07:42 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14447 Sony has presented a new collection of Cyber-shot cameras at CES. Five of them are 16.2-megapixel models able to capture 3D stills, which include panoramas, using a single imager and lens. The five cameras are the HX7V, TX10, TX100V, WX9 and WX10. Among them, the TX100V is said to be a first compact camera which can reproduce 1080p60 video. The other four cameras are 1080i60-capable.

The TX100V has, aside from supporting 1080-pixel video, a 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen. It also sports compass sensors necessary for photo geotagging and supports GPS. The device is supposed to ship in March and would cost $380.

The TX10 camera has a 3-inch LCD which is claimed to be resistant to dust, water, shocks and freezing. The next camera, the HX7V, features 10× optical zoom and 10 frames per second capture speed. It also provides geotagging and support for video and still recording at the same time. The WX10 has similar features but lacks geotagging and also scales down to a lens with optical stabilization, but only 7× optical zoom and f/2.4. The WX9 is equipped with a basic 5× lens. All four models should ship in March and would have prices going from $220 for the WX9 up to $330 in the case of the TX10.

Other Cyber-shots include H-, T- and W-series models. The four W models are the W510, W530, W560 and W570, with 12.1 up to 16.1-megapixel ratings, as well as 4× optical zoom and 5× for the W570. Only the two most expensive devices have optical image stabilization as well as 720-pixel video recording. All four models are expected to ship in February, with prices starting from $110 up to $180.

The T110 camera also has 720-pixel video and sports optical stabilization. It equally has a 3-inch LCD touchscreen and 4× optical zoom. Shipping is scheduled for March at a price of $230. Last but not least, the H70 is expected to come at the same moment and have the same price as the T110. However, it would have only 10× optical zoom as well as 720-pixel video.

Google Maps version 5.0 live on Android Market, with 3D and offline maps http://www.htlounge.net/art/14349/google-maps-version-5-0-live-on-android-market-with-3d-and-offline-maps.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14349/google-maps-version-5-0-live-on-android-market-with-3d-and-offline-maps.html#comments Thu, 23 Dec 2010 21:53:28 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14349 Together with the Nexus S launch, Google posted the promised Google Maps 5.0 on Android Market. The application presented some days ago has 3D as a central feature and can show 3D building models at close-up zoom levels. Owners of the phones can use multi-touch gestures to zoom and spin the views in manual mode or, when the phone is provided with a compass, can let the view to auto-rotate while the phone changes its direction.

The vector-based mapping is also present and provides more useful maps when it is offline. The system is able to dynamically render areas of the maps that were not part of the original view and this way keep directions going in case the user is wandering outside the route originally planned. Google says this method uses about 70 percent less information than the old tiling system and therefore is not subject to roaming costs that Garmin criticized trying to maintain users on dedicated GPS.

Google says that maps are supposed to auto-cache areas whenever the handset is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi. Full offline caching and rerouting are not in place but are expected to improve over time.

The 5.0 is a free update for Android 1.6 or higher devices, although only handsets with Android 2.0 or later are able to get 3D features. A staple of tablets having Android 3.0 will also get the update. Some of the features depend on the country, city as well as performance of the device.

Sharp releases Android 2.2 handsets, with glasses-free 3D displays, in Japan http://www.htlounge.net/art/14094/sharp-releases-android-2-2-handsets-with-glasses-free-3d-displays-in-japan.html http://www.htlounge.net/art/14094/sharp-releases-android-2-2-handsets-with-glasses-free-3d-displays-in-japan.html#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 21:03:18 +0000 adina http://www.htlounge.net/?p=14094 A pair of 3D glasses-free handsets has been launched by Sharp in Japan for Softbank’s network. The 003SH and 005SH Galapagos models have both autostereoscopic displays and Android 2.2. The 003SH model has a candy bar/slate form factor, while the 005SH has a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Both include a 3.8-inch display with a resolution of 800×480 pixels.

A 1GHz Snapdragon processor is powering both handsets. The 003SH incorporates a 9.6-megapixel camera with 720-pixel video shooting capabilities. Wi-Fi b/g, GPS and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR are present on both devices. They also have up to 7.2Mbps WCDMA download speeds. A slot compatible with up to 32 cards can receive a microSD card for storage. The 05SH model has an 8-megapixel camera in order to keep the device thinner and accommodate the sliding keyboard. Some 3 content deals lined up with Capcom include the handsets shipping with Mega Man, em>Resident Evil and Ghosts ‘n Goblins.

It is not a surprise for anybody that Sharp has launched phones with the same technology as the upcoming Nintendo 3DS, as the company is also supplying the displays for the gaming console.

While the Galapagos 003SH is believed to arrive in the United States in December, the 005SH model will not ship until February next year.
