Acer unveiled a wide range of new computers at CeBIT. The series includes desktop computers, notebooks and a netbook.

The Aspire One 752 is a netbook that integrates and Intel CULV processor and GS45 chipset instead of the Atom component used in the current 751 model. Intel’s 4500MHD integrated graphics handle high definition playback and 3D content. The netbook has an 11.6-inch LED-backlighting display with 1,366×768 resolution. Bluetooth, 3G, Wi-Fi and HDMI output are included in the 22mm-thick case. The CULV processor and LED backlighting are supposed to prolong the battery life to five hours.

Acer also introduced the TravelMate 8×72 Timeline notebook series powered by Intel’s Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. The notebooks range in size from 13.3 inches to 15.6 inches and are believed to extend battery life past eight hours. The TravelMate 6594 series offers a choice between integrated graphics or the Mobility Radeon HD 5670 card of ATI. The 7740- and 5740-series devices are oriented toward business customers.

Desktop choice includes the G7750 Predator gaming system sporting Core i7 Extreme Edition processors and liquid cooling. A Veriton N270G Atom-powered desktop system sports a small form-factor and efficient power consumption and addresses other categories of users. There are also additional models meant to serve small businesses.

Acer has not announced any price for the new series of computers and release dates are also unknown by now.

The dual-screen Courier tablet of Microsoft is a book-like device and should be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 250 processor. Certain leaked details of its hardware configuration show the tablet as being relatively portable. Despite having a second touchscreen, Microsoft’s tablet should be lighter than an iPad and have the weight of just over one pound and would be under an inch thick. Its footprint would be comparable to that of a 5-by-7-inch photo.

Some details of the operating system are also revealed. Although Microsoft’s preference for Windows 7 on tablets is well known, the use of an ARM-based processor would require Zune HD and Project Pink. Previous leaks have revealed an operating system optimized primarily for note taking and including handwriting support. New details show the previously hinted at e-reader player.

E-books would play an important role and would include a “dedicated ecosystem” implying an online bookstore like the iBookstore of its main rival. Applications are mentioned in one screen and hint for a Courier marketplace.

A release of the Courier tablet seems more certain now than ever. Earlier rumours mentioned Microsoft undecided of whether or not to release the tablet at all, but now it is likely to ship in summer or fall. The price is obviously unknown at this time.

Leakes about Microsoft’s Courier tablet appeared months before the iPad but it seems to enter the competition relatively late, as shipping is delayed with at least three months compared to the iPad. The Courier will also face a higher price pressure than was originally estimated, the $499 base price of the iPad making practically impossible a significantly higher price for Microsoft’s tablet potential buyers.

Apple’s imminent launch of the iPad may affect the ability of other firms to use solid-state drives, according to some sources in the industry. The company already consumes over a third of all NAND flash memory supplies to produce iPhones and iPods, and making another primarily flash-based product could minimize supplies even more. By reducing the availability of these parts, Apple could artificially force the price of the remaining stocks to rise and make SSDs more expensive to manufacture.

Flash memory producers have developed denser memory at 30 nanometers or even smaller in order to increase the amount of memory possible to be made at once, but prices have still been on the rise this year. Although 20nm memory could solve this matter, it would not be available until the second half of next year, which means late after the immediate supply deadlock.

Capacity of SSDs has increased in 2009, culminating in 512GB solid-state drives that were used in making various systems, but impact on prices was not as substantial as desired, with few exceptions. The price of a 256GB flash drive could reach $1,000 depending on its performance and estimated longevity. Drives with 128GB capacities have lower prices, near $500.

Intel has announced at CeBIT the release of its first Atom-class processor platform optimized for small office and home storage markets. Single- and dual-core Atoms, D410 and D510 respectively, are meant for this purpose and they will run on Microsoft Windows Home Server and Linux operating systems. Intel estimates up to 50 percent power reduction versus the previous generation of Atoms.

Storage-grade Atom chips will ship from products made by LG, QNAP, LaCie, Techus and Synology. The N4B2 NAS of LG with its new 1.66GHz Atom D510 is believed to provide data streaming at 30Mbps within a local network for simultaneous access of 20 users. The single-core D410 is also rated at 1.66GHz clock speed.

The new Intel platform supports up to 12 USB inputs, 6 PCI Express lanes, eSATA ports and a port multiplier function. Data transfers between the home server or small office NAS (network-attached storage) are improved by a gigabit Ethernet MAC controller.

Intel has not revealed the prices of the new Atom processors and did not mention their release dates.

A possible beta release for the Internet Explorer 9 could benefit from a heavy HTML5 emphasis, according to some leaks. It would be presented at Microsoft’s MIX 2010 developer conference this month. A briefing is scheduled with the title “HTML5 Now: The Future of Web Markup Today”. The party will be presented by Opera Software’s Molly Holzschlag who said Microsoft was expected to bring browser storage and other HTML5 characteristics.

Another scheduled session is that focused on scalable vector graphics (SVG), a technology supported by most browsers and especially those recognizing HTML5. The talk, known as “Future of Vector Graphics for the Web”, will be moderated by Patrick Dengler, IE Senior Program Manager.

Internet Explorer 8 has HTML5 capabilities like plugin-free video playback and scalable vector graphics thanks to add-on features from third parties. Google’s Chrome Frame is the most obvious example, inserting the web engine from Chrome in Microsoft’s browser.

The IE team of Microsoft has emphasized higher rendering speeds for JavaScript and CSS support. Standards support is another talking point, but Microsoft did not say how close it will get in compatibility. Its earliest version scored only 32 points on the ACID3 standards test where other browsers like the Safari 4 from Apple are known to reach perfect scores.

All these changes should place Microsoft’s browser more in line with other modern competitors like Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera, all of them using a pre-final version of HTML5 or follow web standards more closely. Microsoft has been often criticized by certain observers for being too slow to adopt standards, as Internet Explorer’s presence on Windows PCs forces developers to permanently have in mind writing code specially tailored for it even when it produces errors or when certain features are lacking.

Internet Explorer 8 is currently shipping with Windows 7 systems and includes features like CSS 2.1 and certain HTML5 tools, offline storage elements only. Microsoft has many times justified the absence of modern features, such as HTML5, by saying that they are not finished and ratified by the company which governs software on the web, the W3C. The software manufacturer has far only supported firmly set standards but has also been accused for falling short of these in some areas.

According to a recent research2guidance estimate, in the next three years, the smartphone applications market could grow by more than eight times. Last year’s revenue has reached about $1.94 billion; by 2013, the market could grow over 807 percent, to almost $15.65 billion. The prediction has been based on a major push into smartphones around the world; analysts say that this could result in 970 million smartphones being in use by 2013. Researchers also claim that the audience is on the way of tripling this year, reaching about 300 million.

Application development has been growing extremely fast over the past two years, especially among the iPhone and Android platforms. iPhone seems to have over 150,000 applications, even if in July 2008, the company started with only 500. Even if Android has started later, with only 30 applications, it has grown since then to over 20,000 applications (in only a year and a half).

BlackBerry App World, the Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace have only had success for a short period of time. Despite this, Windows Marketplace may be “reborn”, thanks to Windows Phone 7’s incompatibility; this will most probably force the rewriting of the applications in order to support the new operating system.

In a low-profile introduction, Acer has released one of the company’s first intelligent computer displays: the D241H. The new display is using the same concept behind the instant-on booting feature for notebooks; it also uses a Wi-Fi connection in order to load a miniature operating system. The 24-inch LCD gets basic Internet access and widget-based news, but also media player and photo frame, no matter if the attached computer is powered or not.

As a traditional display, Acer’s D241H is classified as a low-to-mid range screen, with a TN-based 1080p panel, an 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 2ms pixel response time. Depending on the “analog” (likely VGA) or HDMI, video input is different. The screen benefits from a multi-format card reader and a two-port USB hub. According to Acer, the D241H will offer support for both Windows PCs and Macs.

Neither the ship date, nor the pricing for the D241H are known by the company or third-party retailers. Despite this, it is expected that the small integrated computer will carry the price higher than the price of a display-only equivalent.

More details concerning Microsoft’s new phones, Pure and Turtle, have been leaking lately. The two new handsets seem to benefit from simple and possibly colorful designs. Moreover, it is already rumored that both the conventional Turtle and the squat-looking Pure will be soon available on Verizon. Despite the possible May or June release date, Engadget claims that Microsoft’s devices could be out on April 20th.

Microsoft’s marketing campaign is teenager-oriented and has recently received some details on a possible “truly, madly, deeply” slogan; this slogan was surfaced in early 2010, in a set of mysterious Twitter hashtags. Both the ads and the phone’s operating system are focusing on social networking.

With the release of the two new handsets, Microsoft intends to capture the near-smartphone market category and to also give this a presence of its own in the space currently occupied by Sidekick, which will most likely be replaced soon. Either will use a Windows Phone 7-like operating system, but more superficial and without having the smartphone-level features.

It seems that some HTC support representatives have declared to a CNET UK employee that their cracked display of the Nexus One has been caused by keeping the mobile device in a pocket. Pocketing a handset amongst other objects (for example, keys) can cause the glass’ fracturing. Despite this, users claim that the handset was left charging on a table and showed the damage when retrieving it from the charger.

The support representative has also mentioned that putting the device in a pair of tight jeans and sitting down could as well cause this type of damage. He has also said that people seem to forget that devices usually don’t go in pockets.

On the other hand, an unnoticeable crack could have spread in time, resulting in a major damage of the screen. HTC says that the tech staff usually asks users if the handset has been placed in pockets without the protective neoprene case.

UK customers have to face an approximate £180 ($270) fee if they want to repair a cracked screen; the fee includes the spare parts and labor.

Panasonic has accidentally revealed its plans for mid-March by temporarily posting various details of two new Micro Four Thirds cameras on the company’s own website.

Lumix’s new G2 and G10 will both keep the DSLR-style body, which is specific to the G1 and GH1, and will also benefit from 12-megapixel sensors, 3-inch swivel LCDs and 720p recording; similar features have also been included for previous Lumix models. Some additional features seem to be the touchscreen input, as well as a stronger movie recording for the G2, which is capable to record at 60FPS in AVCHD Lite (H.264); the G10 is limited to only 30FPS.

Photo Rumors has obtained specifications which seem to be incomplete. A SDXC card support is mentioned for the G10 only; an “N/A” for the G2 shows that the data is missing. Moreover, it is still unclear if any of the cameras will benefit from mini HDMI out. Even if Panasonic hasn’t officially confirmed these details, the company has mentioned that specifications are inaccurate.

ISO sensitivity goes up to 6,400 for both cameras. An electronic viewfinder will also be included; hot shoe accessories may include a boom-like microphone, as well as a large flash.

The official launch for the two new Lumix cameras may take place on March 7th, at the Focus on Imaging show in Birmingham, UK; Panasonic has already sent notices for this event. At least one of the two cameras is most likely to reach the US.
