When Steve Jobs took the stage this morning to reveal the MacBook Air, he hinted at an option to replace the 80GB hard drive with a 64GB SSD.

What he didn't tell you is how much more it would cost you.

As we said before, the entry-level MacBook Air starts at $1799, but when you upgrade to the higher model, you'll be forking over $3098, representing a $1300 upgrade. For all that dough, you get a slightly faster processor -- 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo vs. 1.6GHz -- as well as the switch from the 4200rpm PATA hard drive to a 64GB solid-state hard drive. That's one expensive upgrade, considering that Dell will let you upgrade to a 64GB SSD for $1000 and Alienware will let you do it for $900. Both Dell and Alienware have larger HDDs to start too.

That said, the solid state hard drive found within the new MacBook Air is not of the 2.5-inch variety, opting instead for the slimmer (and pricier) 1.8-inch variant.
