80GB hard drive for your car from Toshiba

As proof of the convergence of automobiles and computers, more and more people are installing large hard drives in their cars for the storage of portable entertainment.


For the most part that has been done by third parties and small companies, but Toshiba has recognized the trend and jumped on it in a big way. Their new MK8050 hard drive is an 80GB hard drive that features increased shock tolerance and vibration dampening suited to vehicles. Scratching of the disk, which causes loss of data and other frustrations, is avoid by the protection of a cushion of air around the disk. We don't have any word on price as of yet, but we do know that it will be available by next March, and that we should see it both in GPS units and as part of do-it-yourself (or pay someone else to do it for you) kits.
