ESPN MVP Service

The story of ESPN Mobile is quite the roller coaster. It went live early last year, only to throw in the towel before the year was out. Now ESPN Mobile is back in the game, but it's not a standalone MVNO anymore. Instead, ESPN MVP Mobile is simply an add-on service for Verizon users and, if Travis Hudson of Gizmodo is to be trusted, well worth the $15/month price of admission.

On the plus side, there's plenty of content from news and stats to video highlights and interesting articles, all served up via a 3G high-speed connection. You can select your favorite teams for a customized service too. And unlike the ESPN Mobile of old, you get to run this version on at least five great phones: LG Chocolate, VX8300, VX8600, KRZR K1m, RAZR V3c and RAZR V3m.

On the downside, there's no smartphone support, so you're stuck with suffering through the tiny screen size of regular cell phones. Reading columns is difficult because of the small screen too. Travis didn't like the GUI, the crappy battery life, or the inability to use ESPN while roaming either.

In the end, Hudson still recommends the ESPN MVP service, "but every person's level of sports junkiness is different and you may find yourself not using the service enough to warrant the extra $15 per month."
