The nutty engineers at Volkswagen are at it again, recently announcing a new addition to the DSG transmission family. This new gearbox features seven speeds and twin dry clutches, a sharp contrast from the previous six-speed version that sported a couple of wet clutches. Instead of being submerged in oil, the "new seven-speed gearbox adopts a pair of dry, organic bonded friction linings that do not require cooling."
The plan is to have this new seven-speed DSG transmission mounted transversely. At 79 kilograms and 369mm in length, it's more compact than its predecessor as well. It won't work with the more powerful cars in Volkswagen's lineup, but it can handle power outputs up to 170PS (168hp) and 184 lbs-ft of torque.
First gear has been lowered to provide better acceleration, whereas seventh gear is higher, giving better top-end power. Production is scheduled for the end of this year.
