Washington Law Forbids Texting and Talking While Driving

Here's the 411 on mobile SMS: Texters beware! Washington is the first state in the U.S. to have a ban on texting while driving. The fine is a not insignificant US$101. Laugh all you want to, but another result is likely to be the confiscation of your beloved phone or PDA. So far, Washington is alone in this endeavor, although a handful of states now have laws that ban talking on a mobile while driving. The Washington law does include that no-talking-while-driving ban. The text ban takes effect on January 1. The talking ban takes effect in July 2008. Kind of makes you wonder why the enforcement dates are so far in the future. To listen to safety advocates, this is a big problem right now. It can't take that much effort to enforce these laws than ones already on the books, so why the "cooling off period"?
