It's amazing how much of modern technology resembles things that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry dreamed up more than 40 years ago. One of the latest of those is an approximation of the Universal Translator, that device that enabled Earthlings to communicate with members of alien races. VoxTec has given us the Phraselator P2, a handheld that gives you lightning-quick translations of the various languages you're bound to encounter in your travels, working life, and interstellar treks.
It shouldn't surprise any of us that the impetus for this device was demand from the U.S. military, which has made a habit lately of camping in far-flung locales for years at a time. The Phraselator P2 has one restriction, which is that English has to be one of the two languages that it translates (which, if you recall, was the case on Star Trek as well). This being a military device, it's dustproof, sandproof, and waterproof. The other element of a military device, a high price tag, is there as well: You can walk away with one for US$2,000.
