Talk about pre-orders.

A few months ago, we told you about a promotion run by SMART whereby they would accept US$99 from prospective Fortwo buyers who wanted to be put onto a special list as "interested" when the car was ready for wide release. The response to that initiative has been rather amazing, with 12,600 people plunking down the cash to get on the list. Mind you, being on the list doesn't mean you'll necessarily get a car; but you'll be closer to the front of the line than those who didn't bother to stand in the virtual line.

DaimlerChrysler has announced plans to distribute just 16,000 of the handy little cars in the U.S. in 2008. That means that, theoretically, nearly 79 percent of those vehicles are already spoken for—which means that if you want one and you're not on the list, better act fast. Of course, the response probably means that more people will be able to get SMART than originally planned.
