You never know what's in the air around you, especially if you move in and out of crowded areas like city centers, airports, and industrial centers. You can have more of an idea, however, thanks to a personal pollution sensor called Squirrel.
The sensor can, using Bluetooth wireless technology and a dedicated software program, transmit pollution levels data to your mobile, allowing you to see on your phone's LCD just how polluted the air really is wherever you are.
The palm-sized prototype measures carbon monoxide and ozone, two of the most violently polluting substances known. That information is beamed to your phone and to the an Internet database that monitors worldwide pollution.
Squirrel is the brainchild of an engineer at the University of California-San Diego, which is helping fund the project. The device is expected to be able to monitor nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide levels in the future. More benign measurements are also set to include temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.
