Wireless Transceiver Used Patients Medical Signals

Wireless will soon be getting under many people's skin—literally.

Zarlink Semiconductor has unveiled a wireless transceiver that can be used in conjunction with defibrillators, pacemakers, drug pumps and other medical implants for transmissions at a much higher and more reliable rate than currently available. The result will be improved communication between devices and patients and between patients and medical professionals.

One significant upgrade in the Zarlink ZL70101 is the use of automatic signalling. Current devices require patients to activate transmissions, which sort of defeats the purpose of being able to get medical attention in the case of a swift, sudden heart attack, for example.

The transceiver is to be used both in hospitals and in patients' homes.
