Clearwire Approval Type II Laptop Card Slot

WiMAX is coming to laptops, after a fashion.

Kirkland, Wash.-based broadband provider Clearwire has gained FCC approval for a Type II laptop card slot that plays nice with Windows XP and Vista. The result will be the next step in the evolution of wireless Internet, as WiMAX makes possible faster Internet connections at a wider distance away from hotspots or hubs. (Whether this cuts down on the number of hours that people actually spend in coffee shops remains to be seen.)

Now that Clearwire has approval, it will finish up its production and aim to begin selling the laptop cards by the end of the year.
