Intel Unveiles UMPC Platform Update

McCaslin is out of the bag. Intel unveiled the double-chip set for ultramobile PCs as part of an overall strategy to focus more on handhelds as well as provide more for Linux-based systems.

The new chipset sports an integrated graphics processor along with an official-sounding name. The codename is gone, replaced by Intel Ultra Mobile Platform. Regardless of the name, the platform blurs the line between desktop and handheld, focusing on mobile Internet capabilities while reducing requirements in power and spatial needs.

Ever moving on, Intel is focused on further deliverables as well, including an update to the Ultra Mobile Platform as early as this summer, with a 45nm upgrade coming next year. That chipset will contain just one chip, which will have all the power and capacity of the current two-chip design.
