YouTube has unveiled a new project meant to provide a larger and streamlined approach to music videos. VEVO, as the new project is named, should organize video content by more logical categories, by the genre of content or by channels for example. Common features like embedding should be supported, as well as music-friendly ones like synchronized text lyrics or direct links to musical pieces when available in iTunes.

The new service launches with videos from Universal, Sony and EMI and is already enjoying sponsorship from AT&T, Nikon and Infinity. Ads would not accompany every video and would depend on overall audience. However, videos are not initially in high definition but will be upgraded in the future. VEVO would take over as much as about 85 percent of the YouTube’s music video content and would have potential ramifications for YouTube’s clients using mobile devices for whom native applications are the only way to access music videos. Video clips from VEVO will continue to show up in YouTube searches but when clicked they will redirect desktop visitors to the new made website.
