Sugar Labs launched, on December 8, 2009, the downloadable Sugar on a Stick v2 Blueberry OS, designed for children’s education. The program, initially created for the One Laptop per Child XO-1 netbook, can now be installed on any Windows or Mac running PC, but also on Linux-based computers, thanks to this version.
The new version of the program gets simpler navigation, as well as better wireless networking, faster Activities updates and better Gnash and Flash support. New activities include Physics and OOo4Kids, as an addition to the current Browse and Read apps. Read allows users to read e-books in various formats, including PDF, EPUB and DejaVu. There is also the possibility of reading them aloud, using Read Etexts Activity.
The Sugar on a Stick program can now be downloaded on any USB flash drive, requiring at least 1GB of free space. It will boot directly on the host computer, running under virtualization.
Sugar has a new partnership with Nexcopy, which will allow the OS to be distributed on USB drives (Nexcopy has donated a 20-stick USB duplicator). The partners have also launched a special website, which allows people to donate their used USB drives, in order to transform them into host devices for the multiplication and distribution of the program.
Sugar on a Stick v2 Blueberry is currently available for download, free of charge.
