Sony introduced a few days ago the smallest USB biometric scanner, the FVA-U1, used for reading finger vein patterns. This technology is called morfiria and is claimed to be more secure and accurate than usual fingerprint readers, as it recognizes unique blood vein patterns inside user’s fingers. The FVA-U1 can be attached to a PC using a USB 2.0 connection and is the smallest and the lightest on the market.

Morfiria is a CMOS sensor-based technology that can read scattered light originating from a near-infrared LED source through the finger. The device will be available to ship in Japan starting with December 18th, but price is not known for the moment.
