On November 25, 2009, LG officially announced the release of a new Android-based phone, especially manufactured for China Mobile: GW880. The new handset, also known as Amundsen (named after Roland Amundsen, the South Pole explorer), runs on a TD-SCDMA network from China. It benefits from a 3.5-inch touchscreen, with an 800×480 screen resolution, but also has a GPS receiver, Bluetooth port and a 5-megapixel camera.
The device will be granted access to an app store, approved by China Mobile. It will also use a CMMB mobile TV tuner. Despite this announcement, LG hasn’t yet announced LG Amundsen’s price. The new phone will probably ship for China Mobile in late November. It is still unknown if the phone manufacturer will release the device to other markets or the exact dates of these releases.
