On November 26, 2009, Buffalo released the fastest up to date Blu-ray burner. BR X1216U3 benefits from 12X with dual-layer discs and gets (also thanks to Pioneer) a 50 percent greater speed than 8X drives and is unique, thanks to its USB 3.0 support. The 5Gbps interface seems to allow faster data transfer than the 2.0 USB. Buffalo sustains that the new drive is also compatible with USB 2.0, but this limits the writing speed to 7X.
The company claims that a near-full 25GB Blu-ray disc can be written, at full speed, in about 11 minutes. Low-cost Blu-ray LTH (Low-to-High) discs can also be recorded, but at 6X, and rewritable BD-RE discs, at 2X. Single-layer DVDs can be written at 16X, while the dual-layer ones, at 8X.
The new drive is planned to ship in late December, in Japan, with a price of $451. Buffalo’s products are usually exported in the USA too, but there is still no information about the international release of the drive.
