Infineon will partner with Nokia to develop chipsets for mobile Internet 4G based on the LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard. This is not an exclusive deal and has as a first goal to ensure that Nokia’s technology licenses are supported by Infineon 4G hardware. The two partners will make sure that development is speeded up and 4G works accordingly on all devices, not exclusively on Nokia’s. The two companies plan to cooperate to chipsets for the future LTE Advanced standard, which is expected to be about ten times faster than the current LTE at a theoretical peak reaching 1Gbps.

LTE will probably be the most frequently used form of 4G and is supposed to go live through many providers in North America during 2010 and 2011. This will include Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States, as well as three major providers in Canada. Japanese and European carriers are also expected to adopt the LTE standard. Existing chips of Infineon can be found in Nokia hardware, as well as in Nokia’s competitors’ devices, such as iPhone models.
