AMD has launched the ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card, which is claimed to be the fastest card ever seen. It uses two 5800 series chipsets on the same card and is said to provide the best performance possible. Each chipset has the speed of the 5850 with a primary clock speed of 725MHz and 1GHz GDDR5 memory. The 2GB of memory, the 3,200 stream processors (for effects) and the 160 texture units provide the same performance as two 5850 chipsets, but in only half the space.
Two 5970 chipsets can make a combination in CrossFire mode, giving even better performance in games that support this mode.
Based on the new 40-nanometer manufacturing process, the chipset is consequently consuming relatively little power in idle mode, as little as 42W. Feature support like DirectX 11 and OpenGL 3 equivalent remains intact. So does support for three-display Eyefinity and OpenCL on platforms that recognize it. One DisplayPort and two dual-link DVI ports are present on reference boards.
MSI, ASUS and Diamond should be able to ship the ATI Radeon HD 5970 cards at a price of $599. At the same time, PC manufacturers have access to the same technology for their in-hose designed products.
