ASUS is expected to reach the top of the netbook market share after acquiring the business of one of its main competitors, Toshiba, according to the company’s chairman, Jonney Shih. ASUS could reach the top three notebook manufacturers by 2011 after completing this transaction. As nothing has been finalized by now, questions remain on how close the two partners are to conclude this deal.

The Eee PC netbooks made ASUS rise rapidly in notebook share, but its notebooks had a relatively limited success. Meanwhile, Toshiba occupies the fifth place worldwide and in the United States too and netbooks are considered only a small part of the business, as the company is focusing on regular and even large notebooks. The move of buying out the notebook business of Toshiba would be the second transaction of this kind in the notebook industry, after the buyouts of Packard Bell and Gateway by Acer. This could put the pressure on Lenovo and Dell and also have a heavy impact on Toshiba’s influence on the American market, with Apple being the most important rival.
