The second Android device made by Samsung has been launched on a world level. The new model is a mid-range device and one of the fastest Android-based phones, powered by a 800MHz processor. Its name is Galaxy Spica or i5700. Compared to the original Galaxy device, the Galaxy Spica handset sports an LCD instead of an OLED, which is less expensive, and a 3.2-megapixel camera, replacing the five-megapixel camera of the higher-end handset. The new device keeps the Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS and is running Android 1.5 instead of the 2.0 version. It provides a full web browser and the Google suite of applications of the 2.0-only Google Maps Navigation.
Samsung claims that the Galaxy Spica model will be available in Europe and Russia, as well as in the Middle East and Africa in the near future. The phone does not support North American 3G networks its actual version and is limited to EDGE and GSM in this region. The launch of the Galaxy Spica is very important for Samsung, ranked below Apple and Research in Motion or other companies with heavy investments in Android phones, such as HTC. Samsung phones are mainly based on Symbian or Windows Mobile, but these operating systems are supposed to phase out during the next years.
