A recent report regarding the sales in the third quarter of 2009 issued by Pyramid Research reveals a significant change in the handset sales in the United States. According to this report, the smartphone demand has increased and has reached 31 percent of the new handsets sold in the United States in 2009. This is the double of the 15 percent growth marked two years ago. The research group has also predicted that 60 percent of the new phones sold by 2014 will be smartphones.

Verizon will be the leader in BlackBerry sales and smartphones will represent about 40 percent of the sales made by the company in the second quarter of 2009, according to analysts. AT&T, the second ranked carrier, is believed to have sold about 4.3 million devices in the third quarter of the year, out of which 75 percent were represented by iPhones. BlackBerry is considered to lead the smartphone market in the United States, having 50 percent of all sales. BlackBerry’s sales are expected to decline to almost 37 percent, while the other companies producing mobile phones are believed to improve their position on the market. BlackBerry’s domination of the market is due to the fact that companies producing non-smartphone devices will constantly lose market share.

As for Apple, once the exclusive deal with AT&T will come to an end, the iPhone will have the United States market open and this means 200 million additional wireless customers and represents a double number of its overall sales.
