End of Symbian-based Nseries?

Nokia’s N900 has recently been launched. On this occasion, the company said that it will renounce using Symbian in all Nseries services by 2012. Nowadays, Nokia has only one Maemo-based smartphone, but the company plans to quit using Symbian S60 on Nseries, in the future. The end of Symbian-based Nokia smartphones will be gradual, as N900 itself is considered to be a bond between past and future Nokia plans.

It seems that the company is not planning any Maemo-based Eseries business phones or Xseries mainstream media phones, even though some sources say that Nokia has been surprised by the early demand for its new N900 and, if this is caused by user’s preference for the Linux-based platform, the company could consider implementing it in other types of smartphones too. There is a Maemo-specific application store running at the same time with the Ovi Store, but it will be eliminated once Ovi will integrate Maemo.

Maemo is a platform especially designed for touchscreens, which reacts better in multitasking situations. For example, users can run multiple applications at once, without getting slower performance.

Nokia’s future plans jeopardize Symbian; it depends on the phone manufacturer as its main customer. Symbian has also had a problem with Samsung, when the company announced the release of bada, stating that they will stop using Symbian for their phones by 2011. The OS has been the market leader in smartphones, but Symbian could lose its place, not only because of Nokia’s and Samsung’s future plans, but also because of the new Android and iPhone rising platforms.
