Vimeo announced its intention of extending the movie service onto platforms like Google Android or iPhone and iPod Touch. The whole site content has been converted to formats appropriate to mobile devices. According to Vimeo’s director Blake Whitman, this is only the beginning of offering iPhone support to Plus members, as well as an application in the near future.
Initial conversions are limited to a number of videos picked by Vimeo. Plus members will be able to opt to transcoding of their video content into smartphone formats. Whitman says that users of iPhones, iPods and Android devices will be able to see a special mobile version for any video page that has been re-encoded. Content for Android and iPhone is available through the site’s mobile section. Blake Whitman has warned, however, that some videos that work on iPhone and iPod might create some problems on Android in the beginning.
