Windows Mobile 7 will be released less than a year after the 6.5 version. Microsoft will launch it in early 2010 and its codename is “Maldives”. The smartphone makers will be able to check the operating system early next year so that Windows Mobile 7 can reach shipping phones by next summer. The 6.5 version was presented in the winter this year, but only shipped in fall.

The new version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system is first of all supposed to have more touch-friendly interface support addressed to capacitive touchscreens, providing Windows Mobile’s first native capacity of supporting multi-touch gestures similar to those found in many Android 2.0 applications, the Palm Pre and the iPhone, of course. Zune HD interface elements meant to media playback will also be available.

Like Windows 7, Microsoft is trying to accelerate the release of the new Windows Mobile version in order to recover the delay between itself and competitors like Apple that already have operating systems supporting capacitive touchscreens. Because of delays in having Windows Mobile 7 ready earlier, Microsoft had to update the 6.5 version. On the other hand, many companies have created their own interfaces to avoid the limitations of the current 6.5 version. This has culminated in the addition of custom multi-touch of the HTC HD2 and a quasi-total replacement of stock Windows Mobile controls.
