In mid-September 2009, when the so-called “next-generation of digital entertainment” was introduced, Microsoft revealed that users of Zune HD devices would be able to play 3D games on their digital media players. Keeping its promise, Microsoft added a new mix of games to the Zune Marketplace, to take advantage of the Tegra graphics chip of the Zune HD. The new additions are Vans Sk8: Pool Service, Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, AudioSurf Tilt, Piano and Lucky Lane Bowling. All these downloads are free of charge but the recent 4.3 firmware update is needed.

The addition of these 3D games is a milestone for Microsoft, which also had games on Zune before this one became capable of supporting 3D. This comes a year after a 3D modern handheld platform offered by Apple made such games available through the App Store. Microsoft didn’t intend to have an open application submission, unlike the Apple’s platform, and that is why the applications and games that reach the Zune Maketplace have to be handpicked.
