Verizon will get Saygus’ V1 Android handset

Saygus is committed to ready its V1 Android-based device for Verizon’s network. The phone, named VPhone, is a sideways slider and is a product of the Verizon’s Open Development Initiative device. It will be able to work as a router for wireless broadband.

The VPhone will sport a set of smartphone features, such as a 3.5-inch 800×480-pixel capacitive touchscreen, a 624MHz PXA310 XScale core processor, 512MB of flash on board, 256MB of RAM and a 5-megapixel auto focus camera with flash. The handset offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and EVDO Rev. A connectivity, as well as an electronic compass and GPS. The device is running Android 1.6, but will switch to 2.0 by the time it will be launched next year. A front-facing VGA camera is providing two-way video calling.

The Open Development Initiative will put apart the VPhone from other Verizon devices’ restrictions. The phone will allow, in addition to Wi-Fi, applications like VoIP services utilizing 3G connections.

The phone has been approved by the FCC and is almost certified for Verizon’s network. It will be available for purchasing late this year or in the first months of 2010.
