Samsung entered the mobile OS arena with bada, designed to compete directly against Android, LiMo and other rivals. Based on universal standards, the mobile platform will support developers of mobile phones applications for millions of Samsung devices. bada is considered a developer-friendly environment, especially for those applications using web services. In Korean, “bada” means “ocean”, and is supposed to offer “limitless potential”. It marks the moment where Samsung wants to move from proprietary platforms to an open version.

Samsung will have the first device using bada in the first half of 2010 and an initial applications store. More phones will be ready in the second half of next year and the applications store will be expanded to thirty countries. A formal unveiling will be scheduled in the UK in December. Samsung will host an official event for bada, where the bada SDK (software development kit) will be presented to developers.

Rumors claiming that Samsung will move to its own platform seem to become reality. Samsung will probably give up using Symbian by 2011 and having Windows Mobile as an operating system at only 20 percent by 2012 compared to the 80 percent of today. Modern open platforms like bada will replace Symbian and Windows Mobile.

The official website for bada is live and provides basic information for developers and also for businesses.

Samsung has a wide presence around the world, mainly outside the North American market, so the potential to make a difference is important.
