Although neither company announced the sale, trusty sources claim that Google has acquired the VoIP startup Gizmo5 for $30 million. Skype was also watching Gizmo5. Last month Skype was trying to acquire VoIP startup Gizmo5, but the deal didn’t take place.
Gizmo5 is a good deal for a number of Google products. Google Talk supports voice calls between users but there is no PSTN link to route incoming or outbound calls to real phones while Gizmo5 does this well. Gizmo5, which already integrates with Google Voice, is a soft phone end point for Google users. Users will be able to receive and make calls to their Google Voice phone number from their computer. Gizmo5 will be the glue that puts Google Talk and Google Voice together to form a single product. This additional feature will probably make Google Voice and Google Talk a competitor against VoIP companies like Skype.
The two companies are expected to formally announce the acquisition.
