Samsung, the world’s second mobile phone maker, and the US-based Qualcomm finalized a fifteen-year cross-licensing contract a few days ago. Samsung will continue to use Qualcomm’s wireless technology for 3G and 4G. The agreement says that Samsung will pay $1.3 billion with royalties to Qualcomm as it seems. Samsung’s 57 mobile technology patents will be shared with Qualcomm, but Samsung will not get any payment for this because of a higher value of Qualcomm’s licenses.
Samsung mentioned that the new contract is better than the old one, but no supplementary arguments were offered to explain this assertion. The deal is good for Qualcomm because it gets access to the Korean lucrative phone market.
