Research in Motion revealed the first innovative 3D support for its smartphones at the BlackBerry Developers Conference. RIM has made OpenGL ES graphics available to develop 3D games and other applications by those using new Java SDK for BlackBerry OS 5.0. RIM offers better support for developers who will have the possibility of quickly creating user interfaces with a WYSIWYG view and with improved drag-and-drop capabilities. Developers will be able to integrate paid ads into applications as well as to receive payments for add-ons, articles and other content. Interface creation is simpler with Adobe Flash and applications in the Creative Suite. The Java GUI builder will probably become available in mid-2010 and will be included into the BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse.
Support for gaming comes in a critical moment for Research in Motion, as the company tried to grow BlackBerry App World since April this year but only a few thousand applications were added while Apple’s App Store has over 100,000 applications in almost one and a half year of life. Part of this failure is attributed to the lack of promotion of the BlackBerry as an important game platform. Having a look to the Apple’s App Store will reveal that most of the iPhone applications there belong to the gaming category. More than this, RIM insisted that paid applications must cost $3 at least, while Apple allowed 99-cent or $2 applications on its platform and these are the majority.
