Nook buyers should be disappointed about recent news saying that the e-book reader is not available for shipping on November 30th, as initially announced but on December 7th because of orders that surpassed the expectations of Barnes & Noble, as the spokeswoman Ellen Keating claimed, without saying how many pre-orders were registered.
This anticipation of potentially unexpected sales puts Barnes & Noble in the position of being the main competitor of Amazon Kindle in the e-book readers industry. It seems that the demand for this kind of devices has shown a significant rise and other companies are preparing to enter the industry, Apple with its secret tablet and Microsoft with its Courier.
Nook is an advanced reading device and is sporting both a colour touchscreen for navigation and an e-paper display. It uses a sophisticated mobile operating system, a custom version of the Android. Android was preferred for being an open platform with a very large developer community and for the opportunity of bringing future applications. Nook is capable to provide built-in 3G wireless connection as well as limited Wi-Fi to download books. 2GB of internal memory can be expanded with another 16GB by using a micro SD card in the memory expansion slot.
