ARM is not a direct producer of microprocessors, but offers referential design to other companies, such as PA Semi, Apple’s recent acquisition, or Samsung that modify and build the processors.

Tudor Brown, the president of ARM, provided some details of the next generation architecture that will be used in smartphones and other related devices. The Eagle, as the new generation will be named, has a speed-oriented design and will sport a multi-core structure of the main processor, high-end graphics and improved security to face hardware-related attacks. GlobalFoundries’ 28-nanometer process will keep down power use and will even gain in efficiency when the assembly process goes to 22 nanometers.

Eagle is not expected until 2013, due to waiting for this improved process. It will only ship in 2014, because companies need time to build their products.
