AT&T and Verizon are at war and things do not seem to calm down at all. Both belligerents are trying to find the appropriate means to impose themselves and fair play is not exactly the word to express what is happening.
Recent moves of Verizon will certainly get an answer from AT&T, which has to defend its leading position on the market. Apple and AT&T might use the 8GB iPhone 3GS as its secret weapon against the release of the Motorola Droid. It is possible that the two partners use an iPhone 3GS to replace the 3G version and to keep the same capacity, as well as the $99 price. This would offer the latest iPhone at the price of the Droid Eris but for better performance.
Even if this is only a not confirmed rumor, it can be potentially corroborated with others, starting this summer, indicating that the 8GB iPhone 3GS could also go to Rogers. The Canadian carrier seems to be ready for the iPhone 3GS, which is a more economical device. The switch from iPhone 3G to 3GS will happen when the iPhone 3G runs out of stock.
Verizon has launched an aggressive ad campaign, targeted on the iPhone, to support its Android-based handsets’ releases. The 8GB iPhone 3GS has to face the competition of a wide range of devices at the $99 level, including the Palm Pixi and the RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8520 and 8530, as well as others.
