Completing the line started with the Motorola Droid, Verizon launched the Motorola Droid Eris and the BlackBerry Curve 8530. Verizon is intending to counter balance AT&T that is self-proclaiming to detain the absolute control of the high-end market through smartphones like the Apple’s iPhone. Verizon could unveil no less than fifteen smartphones by the end of this year, depending on the success and the development of the Droid line.
The Droid Eris, also named Desire, is the Verizon’s version of the HTC Hero and the second Android-based phone of Verizon. It is designed to have touch-sensitive buttons, a 3.2-inch screen and a trackball and will be all black. It uses the HTC’s Sense UI layer and sports Wi-Fi and GPS, as well as a web browser Flash that is built-in. The Droid Eris will come with a five-megapixel camera and an 8GB micro SDHC card to expand the built-in memory. The new smartphone will be selling at $100 with a contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate.
The second smartphone that was subject of this presentation is the BlackBerry Curve 8530, an adaptation of the Curve 8520 to CDMA networks. It comes with EVDO 3G, eliminating the Curve 8520’s main weakness. It still features GPS, 802.11g Wi-Fi and a new trackpad control, but has a lower resolution display, only 320×240, a two-megapixel camera and lacks secondary GSM mode. The new BlackBerry Curve 8520will cost $100 with a contract and after the $100 mail-in rebate and will be available on November 20th.
