Toshiba has completed its small hard driveline with three new 1.8-inch dual-platter drives in 160GB, 250GB or 320GB configuration. The MKxx33GSG series features a cache buffer of 16MB, a spindle speed of 5,400RPM and up to 830MBps transfer rates. Toshiba states that these 1.8-inch HDDs are more shock and vibration resistant than their 2.5-inch equivalents. These HDDs have the size of a credit card and can handle up to 1,500Gs non-operational shock and up to 500Gs operational shock, with improvements of 50 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Toshiba claims that the 160GB model can store 45,000 digital photos, 42,000 digital music files or 130 digital videos.

The cheapest version is the MK1235GSL, designed with a single-platter 120GB disk. The housing is 5-millimeter thick and the spindle has 4,200RPM, geared for efficient power consumption. The model has a density of 467Gbit per square inch. The average seek time is 15 milliseconds and the data-transfer rate is 100MBps. Another drive, the MK1214GAH has the same specifications and measures 8-millimeter thick.

Toshiba’s 2.5-inch HDDs are available in higher capacities, but the 1.8-inch drives are used in many ultraportables and netbooks lately. The MacBook Air is available with a 120GB drive and the SSD option expands the storage to 128GB only.
